Are you creative, have an eye for detail and design and would love to work organically? Do you like to make people smile?  Then a floristry apprenticeship could be the career for you.

Our innovative, highly skilled and award winning floristry teachers will assist you in gaining a recognised floristry apprenticeship that will assist you in developing your career.

As an apprentice in our floristry course, you’ll specialise in botanical knowledge and practical floristry skills to be ready to create and construct a range of hand tied, base medium and wired floristry designs.  

Put your innovative floristry skills to the test with hands on experience in our retail shop, Flowers on Elgar. You will gain knowledge in floristry specific subjects focusing on how to recognise, receive, store, prepare and care for flowers, as well as sourcing floristry stock, displays, customer service and merchandising.

You’ll also have the opportunity to prepare arrangements for various functions and events and experience the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show as well as many industry excursions.

Part time: 2 - 3 years (the time taken to complete this course may vary depending on your input)

This is a blended delivery course which will include a combination of online, remote and face to face delivery. Blended learning can involve a range of online programs and resources including StudentWeb, Microsoft Teams, Cisco Webex, Skype, specific industry platforms, pre-recorded sessions, assigned reading, tutorials, discussion boards, and online activities. Blended learning also involves face-to-face attendance at classes or practical placements.

To apply for this course, you must also be registered with an Australian Apprenticeship Support Network Provider and have a training contract with an employer.

PRE-TRAINING REVIEW - to assist prospective students to determine whether a course is suitable and appropriate for the individual needs, Box Hill Institute will assess all students’ language, literacy and numeracy and digital literacy by asking you to undertake a self-assessment review prior to the enrolment. A course advisor will discuss the outcomes of the review and make recommendations about whether the course is suitable for you, and identify additional support where required.

    This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to develop simple drawing techniques for representing and communicating ideas. It does not relate to drawing as an art form. In a work or learning context this unit may relate to visually communicating ideas about objects, as well as the use of space, narratives or the steps in a process.

    This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to complete and document regular maintenance activities for floristry tools and equipment. It requires the ability to maintain the cleanliness of tools and equipment, identify maintenance and repair requirements, complete basic non-specialist repairs and appropriately store items. Complex repairs would be referred to specialist service technicians.

It applies to florists working at all levels including junior and senior florists, studio florists and floral designers.

     

    The unit incorporates the requirement for all employees under state and territory Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) or Work Health and Safety (WHS) legislation, to participate in the management of their own health and safety, that of their colleagues and anyone else in the workplace. They must cooperate with their employer and follow practices to ensure safety at work.

    While the product could be a display or stock item, this unit focuses on higher order sales skills required to sell those intangible floristry products that are subject to future design and construction.

It applies to frontline sales or operations personnel who work with some level of independence and under limited supervision and guidance from others. This includes retail florists, telephone sales agents, e-business sales personnel, studio florists and floral designers.

    This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to display retail merchandise. It requires the ability to prepare, produce and maintain merchandise displays in accordance with visual merchandising requirements.

     

    This unit applies to all businesses that sell retail merchandise. It applies to frontline personnel who have limited autonomy and work under close supervision and guidance of others in frontline operational roles. However; in smaller businesses, senior personnel might also undertake this function.
