Adam Nguyen – Bachelor of Applied Business in Music Industry
Adam is a third year Bachelor of Applied Business in Music Industry student at Box Hill Institute who earlier this year had the enviable experience of touring backstage at the Adele Live concert. He says, “The music business course is such an interesting one. It has been designed and built to make you an all-rounder in the business.
“A lot of people don’t realise is how much work goes on behind the scenes to bring music, events, artists, etcetera, to the market so it really grabbed my attention because I really wanted to be a part of that work. Best of all, this course can give so many opportunities for future employment because of its wide range,” he said.
Abby Gee, one of Adam’s lecturers, was working on Adele’s tour and was able to organise an extremely exclusive inside look. He said, “It was a walk through tour that was run by Adele’s tour production manager. He was able to walk us through all the production, staging, issues and basically everything that was involved in making the shows happen. Plus we were able to stand on Adele’s stage so that in itself was pretty awesome.”
Adam has worked on events before but not to the scale of an Adele show at Etihad Stadium. He described the backstage tour as “mind blowing” saying, “It was not what I expected at all. It is something that is so hard to prepare for; the production they put behind this show was incredible. The best way I could put it is that it was a surreal experience that could not be recreated.
“Just the amount of work and passion behind building a show… If you think about it, regardless of what the stage was going to be, fancy lighting or not, people would still pay to see Adele so it was really great to see how much pride they took in their work and how hard they worked to make sure fans enjoyed the show as much as possible. It’s a really cool thing to see in this industry,” he said.
Studying the Bachelor of Applied Business in Music Industry meant that Adam had an insight into the things he saw backstage. He said, “The scale of the show was huge. That is hard to prepare for but without this course, I wouldn’t have had such an understanding of what was going on and definitely wouldn’t have taken as much away from this experience as I did.”
Adam’s enthusiasm for his course is abundantly evident. He said, “I don’t see this course as study, I see it as the beginning of your career in the music industry.
“There are so many things that make Box Hill great. I would have to say the lecturers we have here, their experience and knowledge is just incredible and they are all so dedicated in making you the best you possibly can be. Also, the experiences the course brings you is amazing and the opportunities are endless.
“As cheesy as it sounds, Box Hill helped me turn my dreams into a reality and that’s pretty awesome,” he said.
If passion is an indicator of success, Adam has a long and fruitful career ahead of him.
