Our CBD campus, which houses the Centre for Adult Education, is situated in the heart of Melbourne&rsquo;s Central Business District.

Our Lakeside Lilydale campus serves the local community as an active learning centre with a range of vocational and higher education courses. The campus is also home to the Yarra Ranges Tech School.

<h2>Meet the Finalists</h2>
Joanne Woodward People, Culture &amp; Transformation, Human Resource Operations and Business Partnering
As Director of Human Resource Operations and Business Partnering, Jo Woodward has addressed challenging situations with grace and flair. The nominator says, &ldquo;A noteworthy callout is Jo&rsquo;s approach during the 2022/23 Workforce Planning process &ndash; establishing the future needs of the organisation.&rdquo; This entailed steering the discussion to ensure that the needs of the department and the skillset requirements were captured.
Where Jo really shines is through her embodiment of teamwork. She is always mindful to leverage the capability and capacity of teams across the organisation that might be of assistance in ensuring goals are met. The nominator says, &ldquo;Jo is an absolute delight to work with &ndash; she treats everyone across the organisation with the same level of respect.&rdquo; With this teamwork focus in mind, Jo is committed to ensuring that every employee can reach their full potential.
Jo has a reputation for being the go-to person for many of the Executives and Senior Leaders across the organisation. She is a reliable confidante in difficult situations and is quick to resolve conflict. She advocates for putting students first and providing them with outstanding experiences.
The nominator concludes, &ldquo;Jo&rsquo;s positive attitude and focus on developing a high-performing workforce is infectious and constantly makes her co-workers feel valued.&rdquo;
Academic Quality Team Academic Governance, Academic Quality
During the 2022 ASQA Regulatory Responses for the VET Scope of Registration and VET CRICOS Registration for International Course Delivery, the Academic Quality Team had the responsibility to coordinate and submit the evidence for BHI renewal of registration. This registration will be in place for the next seven years. Providing registration is essential to delivering quality education programs to domestic and international students.
In addition, the Senior Academic Quality Leaders established a re-registration and quality taskforce. This included frameworks, schedules, and SharePoint portals to support the VET re-registration and a Higher Education stakeholder group for the TEQSA renewal of registration application.
As a result of their work ASQA said, &ldquo;Based on the findings of this review, ASQA has confidence that Box Hill Institute have suitable self-assurance systems and practices for delivering quality training and assessment in line with the requirements under the legislation.&rdquo;
The nominator says, &ldquo;The Academic Quality team initiated professional development workshops to assist with improving the capability to enrich the transition experience and have a quality-based outcome.&rdquo; In 2022, over 250 employees attended the 12 workshops scheduled. In addition, these workshops helped foster and support the building of positive relationships between departments.
​​​​​​​The nominator concludes, &ldquo;Academic Quality continues to go above and beyond the call of duty to support compliance requirements for all regulators so that ongoing compliance and quality becomes part of the BHI culture.&rdquo;
Janine Johnston Faculty of Health, Community, Disability &amp; Animal Studies, Early Childhood and Education Support
Janine, Coordinator of Early Childhood and Education Support, is a professional and much respected member of the team. She is described as setting an exemplary standard of professionalism, care, and innovation, while building a strong team of dedicated teachers. This is evident by the students that undertake these courses. They develop into proud and successful learners who are valued by the industry, and early childhood and education support community.
A strong advocate and active participant for the early childhood sector, Janine has built and maintained excellent industry relationships. This is through promoting BHI&rsquo;s capability and effectiveness to train and develop job-ready educators.
The nominator says, &ldquo;Janine is compassionate and understanding with employee as they mitigate the challenging balance between personal life events and work responsibilities. Every team member is acknowledged for their unique contribution to the team and are assured of their special place in the team.&rdquo;
Janine&rsquo;s passion and commitment for her role often results in exceeding expectations of students and colleagues. The implementation of playgroups has been described as &ldquo;an innovative means of providing practise for students in a carefully supported environment where skills can be modelled and nurtured.&rdquo; Her continuous efforts to find ways to uplift Box Hill&rsquo;s profile has not gone unnoticed. Box Hill Institute Early Childhood and Education Support graduates are highly sought after by industry for placements and employments.
The nominator says, &ldquo;Janine ensures that the team are committed to making the Box Hill learning journey a positive experience for students and our industry partners alike.&rdquo;

To recognise contribution of an individual in professional support services that exceeds expectations. Evidence of going above and beyond in demonstrating commitment and services of high standards to clients/colleagues and initiative/project.
<h2>Meet the Finalists:</h2>
Sharon Norton Business Support Officer,&nbsp;Faculty of Trades
Sharon is described as a highly valued employee who lives and works by, and continually demonstrates the BHI Values. Her passion and positivity contribute to the success and effectiveness of groups she is a part of such as BHI Voice and BHI Champions.
Playing a key role for the BHI Voice, Sharon brings these open and casual conversations within the different areas of Trades, continually advocating for the department and being a person that ideas and suggestions can be put forward to.
Sharon is also a key member of the Senior Administrators Community of Practice. Meeting on a regular basis, Sharon initiated discussions on how to recognise the Deans, as she felt that their efforts in the positions was worthy of higher recognition.
&lsquo;Beans for Deans&rsquo; was born, a surprise afternoon tea for the Deans hosted by the Senior Administration team. Led by Sharon, each Dean received a recognition bag, a bespoke booklet made from the BHI Thank You postcards full of handwritten personalised messages from employees within their faculties. It was through this initiative that the collaborative approach was strengthened in the Senior Administrator Team.
Sharon acts with integrity and will call out behaviour that is not acceptable. She is highly empathetic and is strong in supporting her team. This was noted when Craig Brittle, Dean of Faculty of Trades, suddenly passed away and Sharon led the way in supporting employees though their grief while also grieving herself. The nominator says, &ldquo;I feel the most special thing that Sharon did was insisting that only she pack up his office. She knew how private Craig was and didn&rsquo;t want people going through his things.&rdquo; She wrapped each of his items with love, so when they were returned to his family, they could see that each item was treated with care.
The nominator concludes, &ldquo;Sharon&rsquo;s approach to building a cohesive and strong team hasn&rsquo;t gone unrecognised.&rdquo;
Amy Whitehead ​​​​​​​Director of Marketing,&nbsp;Student Experience
Amy has enhanced the BHI brand through campaigns and events since commencing her role is Director of Marketing in January 2022. She is described as a &lsquo;strong proactive brand custodian and champion who goes above and beyond her role.&rsquo;
In a short time, she has made a significant impact through strategically and operationally leading her team and partnering strongly with the faculties. A strategic thinker by nature, her ability to lead the team has taken BHI&rsquo;s Marketing to the next level. Examples of this can be seen through the further development of the Become campaign, Winter Discovery Nights and Talk n Tours.
The nominator says, &ldquo;Amy is an absolute delight to work with and is a role model for teamwork.&rdquo; Amy works closely with teams to ensure that Marketing and sub teams are aligned, building strong relationships to ensure that there is a one BHI team lens.
Amy was instrumental in delivering a digital marketing strategy for the organisation. Underpinning the development was teamwork and collaboration within her team which led to the contribution of ideas and working together to develop a strong and impactful strategy. This collaboration also extends to the agencies supporting BHI. Amy ensures that anyone working on projects is provided with the support and information they need to work proactively with BHI.
The nominator concludes, &ldquo;Overall, Amy is known for rolling up her sleeves, creating open environments and strong relationships with stakeholders which demonstrates &lsquo;we are in it together.&rdquo;
Rhi Bell ​​​​​​​Internal Communications Coordinator, People Culture &amp; Transformation
As the Internal Communications Coordinator for Box Hill Institute, Rhi is a dedicated employee who amplifies the BHI brand, values and vision. She is highly valued across BHI and is known to be a trusted advisor for teams who she actively supports. Every day, Rhi is a &ldquo;cheerleader&rdquo; for BHI, producing quality, innovative work and taking up opportunities to get involved and promote our organisation.
In 2022, Rhi was proudly selected for the BHI Champions Program, in recognition of her positive attitude. Rhi&rsquo;s team won the Human Centred Design Challenge, as voted by the ELT panel members, for their creativity and teamwork.&nbsp;​​​​​​​
For the 2022 Teaching and Learning symposium, Rhi took her passion for collaboration and teamwork and put a presentation forward entitled&nbsp;&ldquo;The Power of&nbsp;Cross Collaboration - Learn and connect with your peers on how powerful collaboration can benefit the way we interact with our students, our industry partners and each other.&rdquo;&nbsp;This was a sold out session and received positive feedback for the quality and positivity of the session.
When it comes to creativity, Rhi has an abundance of innovative ideas to enhance services to employee and teams. She is responsible for growing our Yammer platform from 2000 to 50 000 views per month and in 2022, Rhi launched the BHI In Focus podcast to rave reviews.
One colleague says &ldquo;Rhi is a high level communicator, consistent in her style and professionalism and always diligent in following through with communication. Rhi has personally gone out of her way to help me with systems and applications regarding internal communications.&rdquo;
Rhi&rsquo;s role at BHI and the positive influence and contribution she has made across the Institute will have a lasting impact.
Amanda Wallace Teaching &amp; Learning Specialist,&nbsp;Academic Governance
Amanda&rsquo;s positive impact is recognised through her initiative and commitment to industry experts embarking on a new career as teachers to meet the demand in our faculties. The nominator says, &ldquo;Amanda&rsquo;s empathy and compassion have been consistently demonstrated through her extremely high level of pastoral care to pipeline teachers who go on to train competent workers in key industries.&rdquo;
Supporting the diverse needs of learners and ensuring they continue to be engaged in their learning journey, Amanda builds relationships with the teachers and their mentors to maintain an integration of skills and knowledge.
She has implemented intensive support strategies in the delivery of the Certificate IV in Training &amp; Assessment to ensure positive outcomes for 17 new BHI teachers in 2022. This included creating and coordinating a community of practice forum for mentoring as a space to process and merge information from students, colleagues, industry and/or community partners in the planning and development of contextualised resources for workplace training programs.
A testament to Amanda&rsquo;s teamwork is her collaboration with Samuel Edwards from Student Life to deliver a training on behaviour management in the classroom to faculties. The training was aimed at empowering teachers to support students with behavioural difficulties, knowing when and how to refer. Her willingness to collaborate and explore new and improved avenues of communication was admired throughout this partnership.&nbsp;
The nominator quoted one of Amanda&rsquo;s students, saying, &ldquo;Amanda (and the TLE team) inspired me to become a teacher and look for opportunities at BHI to share my newly minted skills.&rdquo;

<h2>Award Criteria: </h2>
To recognise innovation and excellence by an individual teacher/trainer in providing nationally recognised training to students in the TAFE and training sector.
<h2>Meet the Finalists:</h2>
Kate Simpson Faculty of ICT, Business, Sport &amp; Creative Industries, IT
Kate works closely with teaching employees to design courses to continuously improve the student experience. She is an essential part of the ICT-Cyber Security educational department and has made it the industry leader it is today. When the pandemic restrictions eased, Kate put the students&rsquo; needs first and offered a blended learning style: remote and in-person education. Students could choose what learning style suited them, creating an open-door policy for students to gain the learning support that they needed in the ICT courses.
The nominator says, &ldquo;Kate believes supporting students during their education can boost the student&rsquo;s confidence. This helps them develop better learning habits leading to long term success.&rdquo;
This creates stronger industry collaborations and partnerships, as alumni taught by Kate come back to be part of events or become teachers within the department.
Kate&rsquo;s dedication to her students is noted by her creation of custom timetables and sit down meetings with struggling students &ndash; anything to benefit their experience. She holds herself to the highest standard and continues to upskill to ensure quality teaching.
Rob Cooke Faculty of Trades, Electro-Technology
Over the past 22 years, Rob Cooke has been an Industry Subject Matter Expert and Educational Trainer, developing and implementing several initiatives. Rob created efficient ways to ensure quality training delivery to his students. Rob has developed resources that can bring a point of difference, through his underpinning knowledge of practical tasks he has brought to life the use of interactive and animated PowerPoint demonstrations.
Rob has made the most of professional development opportunities, such as attending the Electrical Senate conferences, BHI Leadership programs and embracing emerging technologies. His background in engineering and electronics has led to the development of several industry relationships. Leveraging this experience, an electrical career can be at times dangerous, so Rob will always start with encouraging students to take health and safety seriously.
He ensures that all students are treated equally and are respectful of cultural diversity. The nominator says, &ldquo;An example of Rob going above and beyond was finding an appropriate space for a student who needed to pray several times a day. (Rob made sure) the student&rsquo;s cultural and religious requirements could be met.&rdquo;
The nominator says, &ldquo;Rob endeavours to capture his students on day one of training by creating a WOW factor. This achieves student engagement early and builds anticipation of the program ahead.&rdquo;
Susan Donovan Faculty of Health, Community, Disability &amp; Animal Studies, Early Childhood Education
Susan has played a significant role in the development and implementation of two projects that have led to improvements in delivery and assessment practices in Early Childhood Education. &nbsp;The first project was the redevelopment and delivery of the off-campus model for students undertaking the Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care. The second being a writer and developer of unit content and assessment as part of the Victorian TAFE Early Childhood Education and Care Resource Development Project.
Ongoing collaboration was key in developing the off-campus delivery model with the sector, students, and BHI Leadership Team. Leveraging what was learnt during COVID, this new training package was developed with enhancing student engagement in mind. It assisted with keeping students on track with regular contact and provided the ability to network and share ideas with other educators from services. The nominator says, &ldquo;Susan was instrumental in these collaborations with the sector and students. The concept of these classes has been well received by all.&rdquo;
Seeking out her own professional development opportunities, Susan also embraces what is on offer at Box Hill Institute. She has undertaken online PDs, subscribed to Early Childhood industry peak bodies and liaised with the Early Childhood sector. The nominator concludes, &ldquo;As seen, Susan embraces opportunities for her to grow and develop within her role, whilst contributing to quality outcomes for students and the early childhood sector.&rdquo;
Donna Wightman Faculty of ICT, Business, Sport &amp; Creative Industries, Hair &amp; Barbering
Providing a safe space for students is paramount for Donna. She sets aside time to spend one on one time for each of her students to build trust. This is evident in the bond she fosters with her Barbering students and how their learning evolves throughout the school year.
Returning to campus after two years of remote learning has been difficult for many students. While this was not unique to many teachers, Donna has had many students suffering from a wide range of mental health issues. While nurturing these students, Donna also became an accredited Mental Health First Aider.
The nominator says, &ldquo;Donna has spent countless hours in her own time, and on MS Teams with students, coaching them, coaxing them, and sometimes assisting them with their life crisis. Donna is not asked to do this. She does this out of genuine concern and compassion to ensure students have a positive outcome and a life-long memorable experience.&rdquo;
Donna has also gone above and beyond to assist her colleagues. She oversees StudentWeb&rsquo;s learning resources and ensures that KPIs are met, and will assist colleagues with grading to ensure that our students are continuing to receive feedback from the teaching faculty.
The nominator concludes, &ldquo;Donna embodies all the values that BHI holds dear. In the spirit valuing people, I recommend Donna to be recognised for the energy, passion, and effort she applies to her role.&rdquo;

To recognise innovation and excellence by an individual teacher/trainer in providing nationally recognised training to students in the TAFE and training sector.
<h2>Meet the Finalists:</h2>
Simon Edwards Faculty of ICT, Business, Sport &amp; Creative Industries, Music
In 2022, Simon enrolled in a new course offered exclusively to Higher Education teaching employees,&nbsp;Graduate Certificate in Higher Education (GCHE).&nbsp;By studying and completing this course, Simon has developed a new understanding and approach to teaching and learning. This included an increased confidence to write and align assessment rubric criteria with course.
Leveraging his new learnings, Simon led the writing of assessments for new music units delivered in 2023. It has been described as potentially the most complex subjects that the Music Department has ever been responsible for creating. Simon also mentored new employees to utilise these methods. The nominator says, &ldquo;By engaging with the GCHE course and enhancing his own understanding of the learning sciences, and the teaching and learning profession, Simon has taken proactive steps to enhance not only his academic practice but lift the capability of those around him in the process.&rdquo;
Simon is a working musician and has been employed as a Music Lecturer and Music Academic Course Manager for the past 14 years at BHI. Simon supports students with learning difficulties by employing a range of technologies, including speech-to-text equipment and audited music units using Inclusive Learning Design.
The nominator concludes, &ldquo;Simon is a man of integrity and a quiet achiever who produced high quality work. He deserves to be recognised by the Institute for the positive contribution he brings to his students, his faculty, and to the reputation of the Institute.&rdquo;
Brooke Russell Faculty of ICT, Business, Sport &amp; Creative Industries, Music
Voice, Song writing, Ensemble and Music Business Lecturer, Brooke began studying the&nbsp;Graduate Certificate in Higher Education (GCHE)&nbsp;in 2022. The course introduced Brooke to the educational concepts of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and she became increasingly interested in incorporating the concept into her teaching practice. This means teaching a variety of VET and Higher Education students with varying musical potential and academic abilities. Brooke considered how her assessment style links to the learning outcomes and how flexibility could be incorporated into the learning.
Brooke has observed a new level of enthusiasm and a sense of autonomy in her students. To further increase concepts, she would like to implement the development of UDL in music education on a broader scale in the faculty.
Throughout 2022, Brooke collaborated with students delivering two &lsquo;VETis Performance Nights&rsquo;. It was an opportunity for VET students to perform in front of friends and family what they were learning through their studies. Through his study of the&nbsp;Graduate Certificate in Higher Education&nbsp;throughout 2022, Craig has been supporting the diverse learning needs of his music students through the application of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles.
Craig has been applying many of these principles to his teaching practice. This is in the form of providing clarity in his instructions and incorporating regular feedback sessions to his students. Craig creates more opportunities in future classes for student to apply their learnings via the feedback he has given them.
While the Music Department delivers a new degree,&nbsp;Bachelor of Music Industry,&nbsp;Craig has collaborated with many of his colleagues to refine the delivery of the new degree subjects and the &lsquo;common core&rsquo; subjects. This collaboration between the team has resulted in sharing of knowledge and skills. Teachers combine classes so students can be offered a variety of viewpoints, which has helped to better engage students and stimulate discussions. That appears to have assisted students in developing a deeper understanding of the concepts provided.
Through reflective practice and professional development, Craig aims to continuously improve his teaching. In addition to completing the&nbsp;Graduate Certificate in Higher Education, he also completed the&nbsp;Sibelius Instructor Training. This is music software training, widely used in the music industry. Gaining this accreditation improved his versatility as a teacher.&nbsp; He supports his students through best teaching practices as well as personal mentoring.

Box Hill College Kuwait (BHCK) operates as an extended campus of Box Hill Institute and offers six diploma programs in the fields of Management, Marketing, Banking Services, Graphic Design, and Interior Design and Decoration. It is the sole private institution of higher education for women in Kuwait. Its mission is to drive the development and delivery of high-quality and memorable education experiences to equip students with the skills to pursue their passions.
The team has developed a learning management system, MyBHCK, which delivers online learning, including classes, activities, and simulated work experiences. The campus at Box Hill College offers state-of-the-art classrooms with interactive learning technologies, a food court, fitness centre swimming pool and a modern auditorium.
BHCK offers many opportunities for women to grow as strong leaders. This includes practical internship programs, guest lectures, and a variety of workshops to ensure that the learning experience is not only hands-on, but also one of a lifetime.
Graduate and BHI International Offshore Student of the Year 2019, Sarah Al Enezi states, &ldquo;BHCK offers many academic passions and exploration of new interests through assignments. It brings great experiences and gets students thinking about issues such as diversity, ethics, politics, and other dynamics that play a role in every work environment. This leads to problem solving, decision making and great communication skills.&rdquo;

Recently celebrating their 75th birthday through the Centre for Adult Education (CAE), the Short Courses and Languages Centre for Excellence commemorated the milestone with a high profile day and evening celebration on 15 September 2022.
Supported by the Marketing team and the City of Melbourne, the event saw CAE teachers and students from previous decades come together with prospective students from across Melbourne and broader Victoria to participate in a series of free and low-cost events. These included:

The event provided insight into the cultural richness of CAE&rsquo;s shared Melbourne history, but also the breadth of learning services to successive generations of Victorians. &nbsp;This led to a unique pathway of promoting the full spectrum of BHI&rsquo;s ongoing suite of learning into networks of satisfied customers.

Tara Baldwinson and the Beauty Team Faculty of ICT, Business, Sport&nbsp;and Creative Industries, Beauty
The Beauty team, led by Tara, continues year-on-year to grow their community relationships. Throughout 2022, inspirational organisations such as Access Health and Community (Women&rsquo;s Alcohol and Other Drugs Recovery Group), Parent&rsquo;s and Carers Special Needs Children, Make a Wish Foundation, and Very Special Kids have all been engaged to receive specialised treatment and services.
Working with these groups reflects our commitment to families in our community finding themselves in difficult and tragic circumstances resulting in death of a child or caring for a child with some form of disability. The team supports those in high-stress situations by providing high quality massages and spa treatments that contribute to their overall health and wellbeing.
The other key benefit of the projects is that students can use their newly learnt skills in a positive way. They provide families with a special experience and learn the importance of giving back to our communities. The Beauty team support and guide the students through scenarios that require a great deal of sensitivity. Our integrated approach includes emotional, clinical, and practical support to create positive and lasting memories.

Described as&nbsp;everyone needs a little help sometimes, it recognises that alongside people with a disclosed disability, there are many people who can benefit from accessibility services, tools and software.
This collaborative project between Teaching &amp; Learning Enhancement and Teaching Innovations added significant value and a point of difference to the student experience and employees, evidenced by the strong uptake in users. The Accessibility Hub was initiated to help solve a long-standing issue, where students and employees were not aware of the assistance and resources on hand. For many students, they do not disclose their disability, which means that they can struggle or go under the radar. The introduction of the Accessibility Hub means that they can get information and resources independently.
To build the Accessibility Hub, User-Centered Design Thinking Principles were used to understand the issues from the perspective of users. Students with disabilities and their teachers were interviewed and ideation sessions with broad sections of the BHI community were held. Utilising inclusive strategies through open discussion and welcoming of diverse and challenging ideas from across the communities contributed to development of the Accessibility Hub. The nominator says, &ldquo;It showcases BHI as a training provider with a commitment to equity and inclusivity. It supports improving the reputation of all TAFEs, demonstrating effective innovation in training for an increasingly digital workforce.&rdquo;

Rhi Bell ​​​​​​​Internal Communications Coordinator, People Culture &amp; Transformation
In 2022, Rhi Bell put her creativity and innovation skills to work and launched the BHI In Focus podcast series, designed to inspire and connect BHI employees with our Executive Directors and key projects at Box Hill Institute. The podcasts enables listeners to hear their colleagues, in their own words, sharing stories of what is happening around the Institute, what their goals are for the future and how we can partner together to continue to make great ideas happen.
The nominator says, &ldquo;Choosing to highlight the great work being done from around the Institute in a highly accessible format &ndash; enabling staff and outside listeners the opportunity to spend 15 minutes listening to inspiring stories over a coffee break - is a game-changing communication strategy for BHI&rdquo;.
Throughout the entire process of developing the podcast platform, Rhi was pivotal in leading the initiative and had a clear vision and purpose in mind &ndash; to empower her colleagues to tell their amazing stories. For many people, the podcast provides some welcome relief from the heavy volume of reading that is required of them each day. It is a much more accessible form of media that connects with them at a deeper level. The BHI In Focus podcast is representative of Rhi&rsquo;s genuine desire to celebrate the individuals that comprise our Institute.

Corrections Education Beechworth, Dhurringile &amp; Dame Phyllis Frost Centre (DPFC) Corrections Centres of Excellence for Civil Engineering Commercial, Corrections Education
The civil construction skills program within Correction Victoria is offered to eligible prisoners (students) at Beechworth, Dhurringile and DPFC Correctional Centres. The course delivered by Box Hill Institute is based on units from the Resource &amp; Infrastructure Industry (RII) training package with a focus on civil construction. It includes work ready skills and additional soft skills units, which gives students the ability to seize opportunities and put their best foot forward to gain employment. In Quarter 4 2022, we had participation of 39 graduates, 19 released graduates and 13 placed into employment.
Upon completion of each program an employment expo is held at each site with more than a dozen major employers from the construction industry, including multiple Tier-1 and labour hire companies. These employers hold contracts across all major projects under the state&rsquo;s Big Build Program, as well as providing employment opportunities in regional areas. Companies such as Amrick, SYMAL, ZANCOTT recruitment, Larrakia Bilirra Group, Macforce Australia, Western Program Alliance and Keppel Prince Engineering were part of the expo. &nbsp;
With the skills shortage in the Civil Construction industry, students are given opportunities to converse with employer representatives and learn about projects happening across the state. Due to the success of the delivery and the uptake from the prisoners, this program will greatly assist Box Hill Institute continuing its long-term involvement with Corrections Victoria. It provides a benchmark for future Centres of Excellence across all prison sites.
The nominator says, &ldquo;The program gives chances to both students and employers to raise awareness and see released prisoners as potential employees.&rdquo;
Sherry Li, Venuri Kalugamaarachchi Ralage, Ajita Adhikari Faculty of Health, Community, Disability &amp; Animal Studies, Nursing
The nursing clinical placement team are known for their teamwork with industry partners. They build relationships that create opportunities for students to complete clinical placements, which is relevant to future employment and required for completing the course.
This collaboration has further embedded partnerships with a variety of metropolitan and regional healthcare providers. This relationship allows BHI to negotiate future employment options for students studying nursing and guarantee conditional employment upon completion of their course. Students can complete their studies knowing that they are employed once registered. It helps students focus solely on finishing the course.
The team also opened up a revision clinical lab session for students that wish to gain further exposure in a simulated environment prior to attending work placement. This ensures that all BHI students are well aware and prepared for the industry expectations with the required skill sets and knowledge.
Developing these stronger partnerships with our industry partners paves the way for future collaboration and engagement of BHI students, work placement opportunities and training to upskill current employees.
Overall, the collaboration has further sustained future student opportunities and exposure into the Healthcare sector in a variety of settings. Not only does the industry get input in training their future workforce, but it also ensures that the community gains competent, knowledgeable, and skilled nurses.
Grace Connelly, Giselle Mitchell, Katrina Myers &amp; Deb Sytema Faculty of Health, Community, Disability &amp; Animal Studies, Nursing
Giselle and Grace have worked extensively developing a relationship with a new industry partner, Ramsay Health, to create an increase in placement opportunities and broaden the course offering. By the end of 2022, they had booked placement for 2023 for 181 nursing students across 15,670 hours.
Some of these students received the opportunity to participate in a newly established cadet program with a progression pathway. 42 students are to be interviewed for Ramsay&rsquo;s Graduate Program. Successful candidates in gaining these cadetships do not require to be re-interviewed for employment and receive conditional employment provided they complete the course. &ldquo;[This is] the single biggest opportunity of its kind for BHI nursing students to date,&rdquo; the nominator says.
Ramsay Health have reflected on the level of professionalism they have experienced with Giselle and Grace during their interactions with them. They applaud the respectful communications, attention to detail and their quick responses and actions to requests. Building this dynamic relationship led to Ramsay not only consider broadening their training relationship with BHI, but also explore additional opportunities for training not only in Nursing and Health by also other courses.
Enter the BHI Contracted Delivery team, who put together a TAE competitive tender proposal for Ramsay Health. This successful application resulted in Katrina Myers and her team winning the contract. BHI is upskilling Ramsay staff nationally in the TAE Assessment Skill Set specific to their needs by Deb Sytema, Senior Educator. This commenced nationally online in 2022.
The nominator concludes, &ldquo;The collaboration will benefit the client in the future because the Faculty of Health, Community, Disability and Animal Studies continue to build an understanding of Ramsay Health&rsquo;s training needs and continue to partner with them to meet those needs.&rdquo;

 The clean-up and redesign of the timber trades workshops was reinforced by a focus of stronger safety measures as well as enhancing the student experience and increasing sustainability.
 Professional approaches by employees and students were taken, such as the removal of tools stored on walls. They were previously accessible for anyone to access, to use without supervision, and left vulnerable to theft. The tools are now stored securely and safely in lockable cabinets.
 There was also a changeover of work benches to be height adjustable to suit students of varying heights to work ergonomically. The team also implemented battery power tools on the mezzanine level to remove trip hazards caused by electrical power tool leads.
 From incident investigation and industry research the team have implemented a number of continuous improvement initiatives which have positively influenced the health and safety of the area:

 <li>At the commencement of each lesson, the teacher delivers a toolbox talk regarding each piece of equipment and how it will be utilised in that class. This is recorded in the roll book.</li>
 <li>Training regarding usage of the Japanese hand saw and how to reduce injury.</li>
 <li>Improved housekeeping practices- students are now required to leave the workshop as they found it with all tools securely located.</li>
 </ul>
 Acting Dean, Rodger Carroll&rsquo;s research paper,&nbsp;Chisel Injuries Occurring in Vocational Education and Training&nbsp;has been shared with Swinburne, who have also implemented the recommended safety changes.
 The faculty has recently been awarded a $100k international grant, &ldquo;Stanley &ndash; Black &amp; Decker Empower Makers Global Impact Challenge&rdquo; to develop a detailed manual around these new safety processes.

 Andrew Hendrie Faculty of Trades, Plumbing Team
 Andrew Hendrie is passionate about safety and wants to ensure that our students go home in the same state that they arrive at BHI - and that is in one piece.
 Andrew is one of the lead teachers in the Plumbing department and the Health and Safety Representative (HSR). Safety issues are brought to the attention of the Plumbing team, and they convey the safety messages to students through the toolbox talk.
 With the team dealing with many apprentices, Andrew often offers advice to a student who may be finding a situation at work or in their personal life difficult to deal with. In times where he may not be able to assist, he will refer them to Student Life where they can seek additional advice and assistance. This ensures that the students are in a good space and given the tools to succeed.
 If a student is observed completing work in an unsafe manner, he will speak to the student to correct the way they were undertaking the task and make it safer for all. An example of this is the team developing a mandatory rule for all students working with sheet metal products to wear cut resistant gloves after a small number of accidents occurred.
 The nominator concludes, &ldquo;The Plumbing team have an excellent safety culture and we all want the students to be safe. The teachers work on ideas together when introducing best practices to ensure there is a consistent message sent to all students and employees in the department.&rdquo;

 In 2022, RUOK? Day was a focus to raise awareness about mental health &amp; wellbeing in migrant communities. Level 3 AMEP teacher, Syl Lorimer developed a project with the theme, &lsquo;RUOK? &ndash; no qualifications needed&rsquo;. This project required AMEP students to work together and raise awareness about the day, mental health support in Australia, build strategies to support fellow students and organise an event with a cupcake sale.
 The nominator says, &ldquo;One of the AMEP students, who is a qualified GP from Iran, was very excited about this project and saw the value in participating in addressing what is a very prevalent issue. He was humbled by the fact that Australia has a designated day to raise awareness for mental health and raise money to support mental health organisations.&rdquo;
 Also in 2022, the students across the CBD campus participated in The Wishing Tree project. This entailed writing their dreams, aspirations and wishes on leaves and pasting them to the tree. The project fostered a sense of community and shared values which is known as an effective control to mitigate a sense of loneliness and isolation over the holiday break.
 The nominator says, &ldquo;The projects gave AMEP students the opportunity to understand the importance of managing mental health, practising self-care and reaching out to specialist service providers and their community for support.&rdquo;
