If you are seeking to complete this course in 1 year (full time), you will require successful completion of a Certificate IV in Computer Systems Technology or equivalent, or have relevant industry experience or certifications in area of underpinning knowledge in skills.

This is not required for those intending to commence at stage 1 Certificate IV in Computer Systems Technology level.

A minimum IELTS overall score of 5.5 (Academic). A minimum TOEFL score of 530 for paper examination; 179 for computer based and 71 for Internet based, or approved equivalent.

Full time: 1 year (with prior skills and knowledge in IT at Certificate IV level)

Full time: 2 years (includes stage 1 - Certificate IV in Computer System Technology)

You must:

  • have completed Australian Year 12 of education or equivalent, and
  • have skills in or completed a Certificate IV qualification in computer systems or information technology.

Mature age applicants who do not have prior IT qualifications or work experience in the information technology industry in networking, systems administration or IT support will need to commence at the Certificate IV in Computer Systems.


To assist prospective students to determine whether a course is suitable and appropriate for the individual needs the Institute and CAE will assess all students’ language, literacy and numeracy and digital literacy by asking you to undertake a self-assessment review prior to the enrolment.

A course advisor will discuss the outcomes of the review and make recommendations about whether the course is suitable for you, and identify additional support where required.

Successful completion enables you to apply for entry to the:

  • Associate Degree in Computer Systems (Networking)
  • Bachelor of Computer Systems (Networking). You may receive credits for 8 subjects or the equivalent of 1 year.

Alternatively, you may wish to apply for entry to a variety of degree courses at Latrobe, Monash, Deakin or the Australian Catholic University.

This qualification provides the skills and knowledge for an individual to coordinate and administer, as an independent information and communications technology (ICT) specialist or as part of a team, the installation, commissioning and ongoing maintenance of a range of networks, enterprise servers and systems, including internetworking, security and e-business solutions.

You will be required to complete 18 units (12 core plus 6 elective).





This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to install and configure a server as part of an upgrade to an existing network or the implementation of a new network.
