If you are a new migrant and you have already learnt the alphabet, how to count to 20, and can introduce yourself in English, then this EAL course is perfect for you. This course will assist to improve your English speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. By the end of this course, you will be able to ask and understand simple sentences, and recognise and read basic words and short messages.

And if you’re an eligible Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) client, you could attend 510 hours of English tuition within the first five years of your arrival without paying course fees.

You may be eligible for the AMEP if you are a permanent resident of Australia or you hold an eligible temporary visa. For a full list of eligible temporary visas, please visit the Australian Department of Education – Visas page.  

In addition, you must meet the following time frames from the date of your visa commencement or arrival in Australia to remain eligible:

  • register with an AMEP service provider within six months (or 12 months if you are under 18 years of age when you arrived in Australia)
  • commence your tuition within 12 months
  • complete your tuition within five years

All learners are to undergo an Initial Assessment (IA) conducted by qualified assessors from BHI/CAE prior to being accepted into the program. 

PRE-TRAINING REVIEW

To assist prospective students to determine whether a course is suitable and appropriate for the individual needs, Box Hill Institute will assess all students’ language, literacy and numeracy and digital literacy by asking you to undertake a self-assessment review prior to the enrolment.

A course advisor will discuss the outcomes of the review and make recommendations about whether the course is suitable for you, and identify additional support where required.

Successful completion will enable you to study in the Certificate II course and enhance your English skills.
