About the course

This automotive course will help you learn more about the automotive industry and gain skills in motor mechanics.

After completion you’ll be able to carry out a variety of vehicle repairs and servicing tasks with confidence.  You'll also be set up with the skills and drive to start an automotive apprenticeship. 

During the course, you'll learn how to apply safe work, environmental and sustainability practices in an automotive workplace.

This automotive services course covers the use of:

  • workplace tools and equipment
  • servicing and inspection of engines
  • automatic and manual transmissions
  • cooling systems
  • fuel systems
  • steering systems
  • suspension and braking systems
  • identifying automotive faults
  • effective workplace communication
  • automotive battery inspection and servicing
  • automotive electrical systems and soldering

Entry Requirements


Completion of Year 10 or equivalent is recommended

PRE-TRAINING REVIEW - to assist prospective students to determine whether a course is suitable and appropriate for the individual needs, Box Hill Institute will assess all students’ language, literacy and numeracy and digital literacy by asking you to undertake a self-assessment review prior to the enrolment. A course advisor will discuss the outcomes of the review and make recommendations about whether the course is suitable for you, and identify additional support where required.

Pathways & Accreditation


If you secure a relevant automotive apprenticeship, you may enrol in the Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology

This course is government accredited and has national recognition

The qualification is aligned with the Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) level 2
