Our salon assistant course is designed to introduce you to the basic skills and knowledge used in hairdressing salons. You'll learn how to provide assistance with client services, and undertake routine and repetitive tasks under direct supervision and with guidance from our hairdressing teachers in our simulated hairdressing salon.
Please note: This course is intended to prepare you for further studies and training, and does not provide the skills or knowledge to become a hairdresser.

Full time: 10 weeks (this is a blended delivery course which will include a combination of online, remote and face to face delivery)
This is a blended delivery course which will include a combination of online, remote and face to face delivery. Blended learning can involve a range of online programs and resources including StudentWeb, Microsoft Teams, Cisco Webex, Skype, specific industry platforms, pre-recorded sessions, assigned reading, tutorials, discussion boards, and online activities. Blended learning also involves face-to-face attendance at classes or practical placements.
After successful completion of our salon assistant course you may wish to apply for employment opportunities in the hairdressing and barbering industry as a salon assistant, apprentice hairdresser or enrol in the full time Certificate III in Hairdressing course at Box Hill Institute.
There are no prerequisites for entry into this course
To assist prospective students to determine whether a course is suitable and appropriate for the individual needs, Box Hill Institute will assess all students’ language, literacy and numeracy and digital literacy by asking you to undertake a self-assessment review prior to the enrolment.
A course advisor will discuss the outcomes of the review and make recommendations about whether the course is suitable for you, and identify additional support where required.
You may gain work in a salon supporting the running of the salon .
You may wish to pursue a qualification as a Hairdresser or Barber.
Hairdressing of Barbering can be completed either as a fulltime student or an Apprentice.
Employment with an employer is required for undertaking an apprenticeship.
This course is government accredited and has national recognition
The qualification is aligned with the Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) level 2
