About the course

Gain a solid foundation in all aspects of the refrigeration and air conditioning industries. Our air conditioning and refrigeration apprenticeship will provide you with practical experiences in the industry and you’ll learn from current industry professionals:

  • to work safely in the construction industry and carry out Workplace Health and Safety requirements
  • to provide first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • to use air conditioning and refrigeration tools, electrical wiring and equipment of the trade
  • to understand drawings and specifications
  • to identify and handle various refrigerants
  • to service and repair cooling systems
  • to install and maintain refrigeration and air conditioning piping and tubing, electrical apparatus and circuits
  • to maintain documentation
  • to source and purchase material/parts for installation or service jobs
  • to provide quotations for installation or service jobs and to deliver a service to customers.

Blended learning can involve a range of online programs and resources including StudentWeb, Microsoft Teams, Cisco Webex, Skype, specific industry platforms, pre-recorded sessions, assigned reading, tutorials, discussion boards, and online activities. Blended learning also involves face-to-face attendance at classes or practical placements.

Entry Requirements


You must be at least 16 years of age

Industry gives preference to students who have completed Year 11 and show an ability to cope with mathematics and science

JOBS VICTORIA ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Students undertaking this training program must be eligible for and enrolled in the Jobs Victoria initiative. This initiative is designed to create training and employment opportunities for eligible candidates within the Air Conditioning and refrigeration sector.

To be eligible to undertake this training program, candidates must be 18 years of age and meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • women over 45 years
  • people under 25 years
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Victorians
  • Victorians living with disability
  • people who are long term unemployed or at risk of being long term unemployed
  • people seeking asylum and refugees
  • newly arrived migrants from non-English speaking backgrounds
  • Veterans
  • people who have recently exited the justice system
  • people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds who face additional barriers to employment
  • public and social housing tenants
  • Jobseekers registered with a Jobs Victoria Partner

Candidates must apply to BHI via the Jobs Victoria platform or alternatively, a BHI student recruiter will upload the student’s profile to the Jobs Victoria platform.

APPRENTICESHIP ENTRY REQUIREMENTS 

To apply for this course, you must also be registered with an Australian Apprenticeship Support Network Provider and have a training contract with an employer.

PRE-TRAINING REVIEW - to assist prospective students to determine whether a course is suitable and appropriate for the individual needs, Box Hill Institute will assess all students’ language, literacy and numeracy and digital literacy by asking you to undertake a self-assessment review prior to the enrolment. A course advisor will discuss the outcomes of the review and make recommendations about whether the course is suitable for you, and identify additional support where required.

Pathways & Accreditation


After completion, you may like to add to, or expand your knowledge base into other areas of specialisation. You may wish to apply into the Diploma of Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning. You'll also be able to apply for Class 2 - Class 1 disconnect/reconnect/fault finding licence, a full refrigerant handling licence and a construction induction card (white card).

This course is government accredited and has national recognition

The qualification is aligned with the Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) level 3
