About the course

This dental assisting course will provide you with the knowledge and skills to assist a dentist, dental hygienist, dental prosthetist, dental therapist or oral health therapist during oral health care procedures. Within this role, you will maintain high standards of infection control, assist with practice administration and support quality and professionalism in the dental sector.

Students within this program must be employed in dental practice and enrolled as an off campus student or undertaking a traineeship. Our workplace assessors will then support you online and in the workplace to ensure your training needs are met.

Intake Dates & Course Length


Online: you can begin this course any time throughout the year

Full time: 12 months 

This fully online course is supported by a dedicated full time trainer who is available to support your learning via Student Web (our online learning plaform) and Microsoft Teams. Your trainer will also conduct at least 4 workplace visits which are arranged in consultation with you and your employer. During these visits, your trainer will conduct relevent workplace assessments.

PRE-TRAINING REVIEW

To assist prospective students to determine whether a course is suitable and appropriate for the individual needs, Box Hill Institute will assess all students’ language, literacy and numeracy and digital literacy by asking you to undertake a self-assessment review prior to the enrolment.

A course advisor will discuss the outcomes of the review and make recommendations about whether the course is suitable for you, and identify additional support where required.

Course Structure


You will be required to complete 11 units. 

You must also complete 300 hours of workplace placement during the course of your enrolment.

As part of this qualification, you must complete HLTAID003 Provide First Aid. You will be offered dates to undertake this unit on campus throughout your enrollment. Alternatviely, you may undertake this unit of comeptency with an independent first aid training provider and apply for a credit transfer.
