About the course

Looking for a career in fitness where you can be your own boss, choose your hours and get paid to have fun on the job? The fitness industry is growing rapidly and needs more qualified personal trainers (PT). Our Certificate III in Fitness course will prepare you for entry into the Certificate IV in Fitness.

You will learn the latest training techniques from industry leaders. Plus, develop your fitness skills and knowledge through practical hands on experience in our on campus gym.

Our course incorporates both fitness and business units and prepares you to work in a gym, in fitness administration or as a fitness or group instructor. You may also deliver exercise programs at community venues, work with clients with special needs or help medical professionals with patient rehabilitation.

You will study theory in the classroom and practice in the gym. You’ll also gain industry experience via practical placement. If you’re prepared to work hard and perform well during placement, you may find you’re offered employment once you complete your course.

Partial completion of this course is the entry requirement for Certificate IV in Fitness. You will complete 9 units from the Certificate III before progressing into the SIS40215 Certificate IV in Fitness.

Intake Dates & Course Length

February, April and October

Completion of the 9 units studied as part of the Certificate III in Fitness will prepare you for enrolment into the SIS40215 Certificate IV in Fitness in April and July.

Full time: 3 months 

This is a blended delivery course which will include a combination of online, remote and face to face delivery. Blended learning can involve a range of online programs and resources including StudentWeb, Microsoft Teams, Cisco Webex, Skype, specific industry platforms, pre-recorded sessions, assigned reading, tutorials, discussion boards, and online activities. Blended learning also involves face-to-face attendance at classes or practical placements.

Career Outcomes

After successful completion of Certificate III & IV in Fitness, you may wish to apply for employment opportunities as a personal trainer in the fitness industry. Additionally you will be eligible to apply for registration with key industry bodies including Physical Activity Australia and Fitness Australia.

Entry Requirements

You must be at least 18 years of age. Ideally you should have a reasonable level of fitness. If you have any concerns with this please discuss with one of our fitness course experts.


To assist prospective students to determine whether a course is suitable and appropriate for the individual needs, Box Hill Institute will assess all students’ language, literacy and numeracy and digital literacy by asking you to undertake a self-assessment review prior to the enrolment.

A course advisor will discuss the outcomes of the review and make recommendations about whether the course is suitable for you, and identify additional support where required.


VTAC and direct entry

Recognition of Prior Learning is available.

Pathways & Accreditation

Successful completion of 9 specific units will enable you to apply for the Certificate IV in Fitness, which may lead to the Diploma level options. Our diploma course gives you the foundation to apply for a range of degree courses in the areas of sport science or human movement.

This course is government accredited and has national recognition

The qualification is aligned with the Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) level 3
