This course is offered as an apprenticeship as well as a non-apprenticeship course.
Do you like the hands-on approach to work? Are you interested in working with wood? During this course you will work with solid timber and manufactured board as you learn a broad range of furniture making skills.
This course will teach you essential trades skills including occupational health and safety requirements, workplace communication skills and how to be a valuable member of a team.
You will learn how to read documents, use hand and power tools, the various construction methods, materials and techniques used as well as the different styles of furniture that can be created. You will begin with the basics of drawing up plans and designs as well as calculating what a project will cost.
You will use a CNC and other woodworking machines including drilling, sawing and edging machines.
Learn as you create high quality furniture items that you can take with you.

This is a blended delivery course which will include a combination of online, remote and face to face delivery.

Blended learning can involve a range of online programs and resources including StudentWeb, Microsoft Teams, Cisco Webex, Skype, specific industry platforms, pre-recorded sessions, assigned reading, tutorials, discussion boards, and online activities. Blended learning also involves face-to-face attendance at classes or practical placements.
This course may provide you with employment opportunities in the furnishing industry as a furniture maker or lead to employment opportunities in retail furniture or furniture design.

To apply for this course, you must also be registered with an Australian Apprenticeship Support Network Provider and have a training contract with an employer.

PRE-TRAINING REVIEW
To assist prospective students to determine whether a course is suitable and appropriate for the individual needs, Box Hill Institute will assess all students’ language, literacy and numeracy and digital literacy by asking you to undertake a self-assessment review prior to the enrolment.
A course advisor will discuss the outcomes of the review and make recommendations about whether the course is suitable for you, and identify additional support where required.
For the apprenticeship course - you will need to apply through your employer and an Australian Apprenticeship Centre.
For non-apprenticeship training - enrol directly with the Institute.
Recognition of Prior Learning is available.
You may want to continue on and complete the Certificate IV in Furniture Design and Technology.
