About the course

Do you want to make a difference to the experience of hospital patients? Get started in this rewarding career with our health services course. In this health course you will learn the skills and knowledge to work as a health services assistant in a hospital. 

In this health course, you will prepare for direct client contact and care under supervision. You will gain knowledge and practical skills in typical work tasks including:

  • anatomy and medical terminology
  • maintain infection control
  • make and maintain patient beds
  • move patients within the hospital setting
  • clean and maintain wards
  • serve patient meals

Intake Dates & Course Length

February and August

Full time: 6 months (3 days per week 9am-4pm)

This is a blended delivery course which will include a combination of online, remote and face to face delivery. Blended learning can involve a range of online programs and resources including StudentWeb, Microsoft Teams, Cisco Webex, Skype, specific industry platforms, pre-recorded sessions, assigned reading, tutorials, discussion boards, and online activities. Blended learning also involves face-to-face attendance at classes or practical placements.

Entry Requirements

You must have:

  • good spoken English
  • good communication skills
  • access to a computer with a microphone and camera
  • capable of performing physical work

Prior to attending placement you must have:

  • a current National Police Check
  • a Working With Children Check
  • Healthcare Workers 'Schedule A' immunisations


To assist prospective students to determine whether a course is suitable and appropriate for the individual needs, Box Hill Institute will assess all students’ language, literacy and numeracy and digital literacy by asking you to undertake a self-assessment review prior to the enrolment.

A course advisor will discuss the outcomes of the review and make recommendations about whether the course is suitable for you, and identify additional support where required.

Successful completion will give you to a range of further study options in nursing, allied health, assistant in nursing or operating theatre technician.
