About the course

If you have a genuine interest in caring for older people, and or those with disabilities, then our course in individual support will help you gain essential, person-centred skills and knowledge to care for and support people living in residential care facilities.

In this health course, you’ll learn how to provide physical and psycho-social support for people requiring support, including how to:

  • support people who may be living with dementia and/or other illnesses or disabilities
  • prevent falls
  • support independence and well-being
  • develop communication skills in health and community services
  • work in residential care settings

You’ll understand how to comply with the accreditation requirements in the care sector, and you’ll be ready to deliver outstanding customer service and support to vulnerable people.

In studying this course, you will also have the opportunity to undertake work placement with leading industry care providers.

Full time: 6 - 9 months (minimum 2-3 days on campus) 

Your studies will include a minimum of 120 hours of practical placement in a residential care setting.

Entry Requirements


You must:

  • demonstrate a good level of English - reading, writing and verbal communication 
  • provide evidence you have achieved level 3 in English, writing and numeracy on the language skills test
  • have access to a computer 

Prior to practical placement you will be required to provide evidence of:

  • a current National Police Check
  • immunisation requirements: 'Category A' Health Care Worker
  • NDIS screening check

PRE-TRAINING REVIEW - to assist prospective students to determine whether a course is suitable and appropriate for the individual needs, Box Hill Institute will assess all students’ language, literacy and numeracy and digital literacy by asking you to undertake a self-assessment review prior to the enrolment. A course advisor will discuss the outcomes of the review and make recommendations about whether the course is suitable for you, and identify additional support where required.

Pathways & Accreditation


Successful completion will enable you to apply for further studies in related health courses including in Certificate IV in Disability, Certificate IV in Allied Health Assistance or the Diploma of Nursing.

This course is government accredited and has national recognition

The qualification is aligned with the Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) level 3
