This course is designed to give you the skills you need to begin your career in Information and Communications Technology (ICT). The course has a focus on cyber security.  You'll learn a broad range of skills from cyber awareness, teamwork, networking, programming and threat assessments 

To give you the edge you need to thrive in the industry we have developed a course with topics such as protecting personal privacy, online profiles and workplace information making you work ready. You'll gain valuable skills and knowledge, making this an excellent pathway to the Certificate IV in Information Technology or the Certificate IV in Cyber Security. 

In our cyber focused Information Technology course, you'll gain practical skills in:

  • critical thinking
  • managing personal information
  • working with teams and clients
  • assessing threats and vulnerabilities
  • administer ICT systems security
  • implement network security
  • scripting

Intake Dates & Course Length

February and July 

Full time: 1 year (usually 1.5 to 2 days per week)

This is a blended delivery course which will include a combination of online, remote and face to face delivery. Blended learning can involve a range of online programs and resources including StudentWeb, Microsoft Teams, Cisco Webex, Skype, specific industry platforms, pre-recorded sessions, assigned reading, tutorials, discussion boards, and online activities. Blended learning also involves face-to-face attendance at classes or practical placements.

Entry Requirements

Prior familiarity with computers and software is not required but is an advantage.

Domestic students must have either: 

  • successfully completed Year 12 or equivalent, or 
  • successfully completed Year 11 and attend an interview, or 
  • be a mature aged applicant, or 
  • be a current VCAL student ( you can study selected units in conjunction with your VCAL studies) 

Study scholarships are available to applicants who already hold higher qualifications.


To assist prospective students to determine whether a course is suitable and appropriate for the individual needs, Box Hill Institute will assess all students’ language, literacy and numeracy and digital literacy by asking you to undertake a self-assessment review prior to the enrolment.

A course advisor will discuss the outcomes of the review and make recommendations about whether the course is suitable for you, and identify additional support where required.

Recognition of Prior Learning is available.

Pathways & Accreditation

Successful completion of this course enables you to apply for either the Certificate IV in Information Technology or the Certificate IV in Cyber Security.

This course is government accredited and has national recognition

The qualification is aligned with the Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) level 3
