Model your career as a makeup artist with our flexible online makeup course, which equips you with the skills and knowledge required to succeed as a makeup artist within the industry.  With this fully online industry makeup course you can learn in the comfort of your own home and at a time that suits you.

During our makeup course you'll learn how to design and apply makeup and style hair for special occasions, bridal and the catwalk and apply airbrush makeup, photography and remedial camouflage makeup across the beauty, fashion, media and entertainment industries. You will gain valuable knowledge on how to work with  photoshoots with a professional Photographer both in the studio and on location, to build your portfolio, you will learn the art of marketing your small business and how to promote it on social media.

As a makeup artist you’ll typically work as part of a team or as a freelance artist in settings such as make up studios, on location, retail cosmetic counters, fashion, media sets and photography studios.

Intake Dates & Course Length

Online monthly intakes at the start of each month

Flexible: fastrack in 4 - 6 months or study at your own pace and finish in 38 weeks. 

This course is delivered online.  Online learning can involve a range of programs and resources including StudentWeb, Microsoft Teams, Cisco Webex, Skype, specific industry platforms, pre-recorded sessions, assigned reading, tutorials, discussion boards, and online activities. Online delivery means that you can enrol in this course when you wish, and complete at your own pace.

Entry Requirements

You must:

  • be at least 17 years of age, or mature-age
  • have successfully completed Year 11
  • have sufficient literacy, numeracy and visual interpretation skills to successfully complete the course
  • possess excellent people skills


To assist prospective students to determine whether a course is suitable and appropriate for the individual needs, Box Hill Institute will assess all students’ language, literacy and numeracy and digital literacy by asking you to undertake a self-assessment review prior to the enrolment.

A course advisor will discuss the outcomes of the review and make recommendations about whether the course is suitable for you, and identify additional support where required.

Recognition of Prior Learning is available.

Pathways & Accreditation

Successful completion of our make up course will enable you to apply for our Diploma of Screen and Media (Specialising in Make up Services) course or the Diploma of Beauty Therapy. You may be eligible for credit from previous study.

This course is government accredited and has national recognition

The qualification is aligned with the Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) level 3

In order to successfully complete this course you will be required to purchase a specific set of professional industry products and equipment. Upon enrolment you will receive a welcome letter outlining detailed instructions on how and where to order these kits at student prices.

At commencement of the course the following recommended professional kits are required:

  • Certificate III in Makeup student kit
  • remedial camouflage student makeup kit

Halfway through the course the following recommended professional kits are required:

  • hair kit
  • student airbrush kit
