About the course

Develop your career and employment options. If you’re already in the building and construction industry and would like to step up into supervisory roles or you’re a tradesperson seeking to become a subcontractor then our building course will give you the skills to achieve your career aspirations.

Through our building course, and with current industry professionals you will gain the skills and knowledge to:

  • coordinate the construction of low-rise buildings
  • select and prepare major domestic construction contracts
  • plan and prepare project estimates and schedules
  • manage occupational health and safety
  • apply the National Construction Codes and Australian Standards to building systems
  • manage small business finances

After successful completion, and with relevant industry experience, you may apply to the Building Practitioners Board (BPB) to become a registered building practitioner under the domestic builder category.

Please note the CPC40110 Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) is not a prescribed qualification under the Building Regulations 2006. To find out more about becoming a registered building practitioner please refer to the Victorian Building Authority website.

Part time: 1 year (Mondays & Wednesdays 5:30 - 9:30pm) and some scheduled Saturdays (the time taken to complete this course will vary depending on your input)

Blended learning can involve a range of online programs and resources including StudentWeb, Microsoft Teams, Cisco Webex, Skype, specific industry platforms, pre-recorded sessions, assigned reading, tutorials, discussion boards, and online activities. Blended learning also involves face-to-face attendance at classes or practical placements.

Entry Requirements


You must have basic computer skills (be able to navigate the internet and use basic functions of Microsoft Word)

PRE-TRAINING REVIEW - to assist prospective students to determine whether a course is suitable and appropriate for the individual needs, Box Hill Institute will assess all students’ language, literacy and numeracy and digital literacy by asking you to undertake a self-assessment review prior to the enrolment. A course advisor will discuss the outcomes of the review and make recommendations about whether the course is suitable for you, and identify additional support where required.

Pathways & Accreditation


Students who wish to do further studies may progress to the Diploma of Building and Construction (Building). Credit transfer is available for students who successfully complete the Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building).

This course is government accredited and has national recognition

The qualification is aligned with the Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) level 4
