Our outdoor education course is delivered as a dual qualification in conjunction with the Certificate IV in Guiding.

If you’d like to choose your own outdoor adventure, our Certificate IV in Outdoor Education is an ideal choice for you. You will open up career pathways to outdoor recreation, outdoor education, teaching, sports management, exercise science, tourism and international guiding through this course. Your potential employment settings include the corporate world, education and private enterprise. 

To prepare for the demands of the industry, our course focuses on outdoor activity training to both guide and instructor levels. You will learn specific skills in areas including bushwalking, canoeing, snow sports, rafting, climbing, abseiling, mountain biking, risk management, navigation and trip planning. Develop the capabilities required to plan and deliver an outdoor recreation program for a wide range of clients.

You must be 18 years of age.  

Entry into this qualification without prior outdoor recreation industry experience or formal qualifications is not recommended.

Successful completion will enable you to apply for the Diploma of Outdoor Recreation, Diploma of Sports Development, Diploma of Fitness or the Diploma of Events.  You may also apply for the Bachelor of Education (Outdoor Education) or the Bachelor of Outdoor and Environmental Studies and Exercise Science at a university.

Recognition of Prior Learning is available.

This course is government accredited and has national recognition

The qualification is aligned with the Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) level 4

After successful completion, you may wish to apply for roles such as:

  • outdoor guide (uncontrolled environment)
  • outdoor instructor
  • site manager
  • camp facilitator
  • specialist activity instructor
  • tour guide

Certificate IV in Guiding – 17 units (11 core and 6 elective). 

Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation – 31 units (15 core and 16 electives). 

There is one unit common to both courses so in total you will study 47 units (25 core, 22 electives).
