Dive into the world of web development and software programming with our web development course, which delivers the practical skills you need to design, build and manage websites.

In our web development course you'll:

  • deepen your understanding of current industry web and software programming tools
  • develop skills used in designing and building enterprise databases, software and web applications, android applications, and addressing content management and versioning control
  • learn how to use web technologies including PHP, PHP Framework, CSS3, HTML5, Bootstrap 3+, JEE Java for the Web, JPA, ORM, JSP, and Servlets
  • study software programming languages including: C#.NET, Java, Java Script, Oracle, MySQL, SQL Server, WordPress, and Eclipse

You'll also get to work with a team on a project to design, develop and present a web/software/database solution to meet an enterprise specification requirement. In your collaborative project, you’ll learn:

  • how to gather information to identify business requirements
  • translate business needs into technical requirements
  • use learned rapid application development skills to build a web/software solution
  • validate and test a solution

You may consider commencing your studies at the Certificate IV in Information Technology level to ensure you have the underpinning knowledge and skills for this diploma.

If you've already completed a Certificate IV in Information Technology, or have demonstrated software and website development programming skills, you'll be well suited to this qualification.

You also have the opportunity to study and complete a dual qualification in the Diploma of Software Development.

Full time:

  • 1 year with prior skills and knowledge in IT at Certificate IV level, or
  • 2 years (the first year of which you will complete the Certificate IV in Information Technology)

Entry Requirements

You must:

  • have completed Australian Year 12 of education
  • have completed a Certificate IV qualification in programming or have equivalent skills knowledge and experience, or
  • be a mature-age applicant who has worked in the IT industry in a programming role

If you do not have IT skills at a Certificate IV level, you can enrol in one of our Certificate IV courses.


To assist prospective students to determine whether a course is suitable and appropriate for the individual needs, Box Hill Institute will assess all students’ language, literacy and numeracy and digital literacy by asking you to undertake a self-assessment review prior to the enrolment.

A course advisor will discuss the outcomes of the review and make recommendations about whether the course is suitable for you, and identify additional support where required.

Pathways & Accreditation

Our website development course has a strong core ICT base, sharing the same core competencies as several other IT qualifications of the same level. Depending on the stream chosen, you may wish to apply for our Bachelor of Computer Systems or alternatively you can apply for a variety of degree courses at La Trobe, Monash, Deakin or Australian Catholic University.

Course Structure

For the Diploma of Website Development you need to complete a minimum of 8 core units and 12 elective units.

If you choose to enrol in the dual qualifications you will need to complete the following:

  • Diploma of Website Development: 8 core units and 12 elective units, and
  • Diploma of Software Development: 10 core units and 6 elective units

There are common core and elective units across both qualifications. The total number of units to be studied in the dual qualification will be 24 units.
