Graduate Diploma of Animal Biomechanical Medicine
As an experienced veterinarian, chiropractor or osteopath, via our Graduate Diploma in Animal Biomechanical Medicine you’ll learn how to apply biomechanical care to animal patients.
Developed by the Animal Biomechanical Professionals Australia (ABPA), this course provides practical skills and knowledge to apply animal biomechanical examination and treatment techniques.
You’ll learn the relevant canine and equine anatomy, biomechanics and neurophysiology. You will also gain skills in:
- safe work practices while applying biomechanical techniques
- assessing and interpreting animal patient response
- the importance and incidence of contraindications to biomechanical care
- examination techniques required to determine the need for referral or modification of care
- the safe and effective application of biomechanical assessment and treatments

Full time: 2 years
Blended learning with 4 on-campus workshops per year, i.e. 8 workshops in total. Each workshop is of 4 days duration.
You must have one of the following qualifications:
- Bachelor of Veterinary Science
- Bachelor of Chiropractic Science
- Master of Chiropractic
- Bachelor of Applied Science (Osteopathy)
You must also:
- be registered to practice your original profession (veterinary science, chiropractic or osteopathy) in the geographic area in which you practice
- demonstrate a level of experience with a minimum of 2 years in full-time practice
- have a high degree of physical agility and moderate strength
- have a command of the English language, with oral and written communication skills equivalent to Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) Level 5.
You will need to complete an application form and participate in a selection interview.
To assist prospective students to determine whether a course is suitable and appropriate for the individual needs, Box Hill Institute will assess all students’ language, literacy and numeracy and digital literacy by asking you to undertake a self-assessment review prior to the enrolment.
A course advisor will discuss the outcomes of the review and make recommendations about whether the course is suitable for you, and identify additional support where required.
After successful completion of our Graduate Diploma in Animal Biomechanical Medicine, you’ll have advanced knowledge of assessment and advanced therapeutic skills in your professional area of veterinary, chiropractic or osteopathic science. You’ll be able to apply this body of knowledge in a range of contexts, and it will also serve as a pathway for further learning by emphasising the constant need for ongoing professional development by practitioners

The qualification is aligned with the Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) level 8
Animal biomechanical medicine practitioners are generally employed in private practice, either as sole practitioners or within group practices. Chiropractors and osteopaths often maintain their human practice with an additional animal component.
Completion of this course will also enable you to apply for membership of the ABPA.
Blended delivery is work based and comprises 8 x 4-day workshops, supported by learner modules, recommended texts and online resources. Each workshop delivers practical skill sets as learners progress through the course. Assessments include online examinations, written assignments and case studies, as well as practical demonstrations and a work placement.
Course structure allows for interstate and NZ students to complete this course through the block release workshop.
