This course provides a cyber security practitioner with an introduction to the skills and knowledge required to comprehend how data travels around the internet and the function and operation of protocols such as the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) suite and devices that facilitate this data transfer. 

After successful completion of this introductory-level course, you will be able to install, configure and maintain networking infrastructure and devices and will gain an understanding of TCP/IP protocols, VMware fundamentals, together with network analysis tool Wireshark.

Course content also includes:

  • Media Access Layer (MAC) addresses
  • binary and hexadecimal number systems

Familiarity with networking concepts and experience installing and configuring software packages is a prerequisite for this course.

Students are encouraged to study Cisco Cyber Security Essentials and IT Skills for Cyber Security either before, or concurrently with this course.

You have the option to complete the assessment for the unit of competency VU21988 Utilise Basic Networking Concepts and Protocols Required in Cyber Security. VU21988 is a core unit in the Certificate IV in Cyber Security, therefore, upon successful completion you will automatically receive a credit transfer.

Alternatively, students who do not wish to complete the assessment can receive an ungraded participation mark.
