Understanding how data travels around the internet is paramount for those working in the field of cyber security and ICT. Utilising Cisco learning materials, our networking essentials for cyber security practitioners course provides the foundations of networking operations required by cyber security practitioners. You will learn about the nature of attacks via the TCP/IP suite of protocols, tools to gather this information and you will be introduced to analysis techniques.

Upon the completion of the networking essentials for cyber security practitioners course, you are encouraged to consider other cyber security and networking courses including:

  • Cisco Cyber Security Essentials
  • Python Programming for Cyber Security
  • Cyber Security Intrusion Detection Fundamentals
  • Cyber Security Incident Response Fundamentals
  • PEN Testing Fundamentals in Cyber Security
  • Advanced PEN Testing Fundamentals in Cyber Security
  • Certificate IV in Cyber Security

This course provides a cyber security practitioner with an introduction to the skills and knowledge required to comprehend how data travels around the internet and the function and operation of protocols such as the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) suite and devices that facilitate this data transfer.

After successful completion of this introductory-level course, you will be able to install, configure and maintain networking infrastructure and devices and will gain an understanding of TCP/IP protocols, VMware fundamentals, together with network analysis tool Wireshark.

Course content also includes:

  • OSI layered communication model
  • Media Access Layer (MAC) addresses
  • binary and hexadecimal number systems
  • Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) protocol
  • User Datagram Protocol (UDP)
  • IPV4 addressing, basic IPV6 addressing
  • routers, switches, firewall fundamentals & wireless access points
  • end to end test commands e.g. Ping, Traceroute
  • Netstumbler & Netstat
  • fundamental DOS & DDOS attack mechanisms
  • fundamental ransomware attack mechanisms
  • wireless LANs and their use and vulnerabilities

Familiarity with networking concepts and experience installing and configuring software packages is a prerequisite for this course.

Students are encouraged to study Cisco Cyber Security Essentials and IT Skills for Cyber Security either before, or concurrently with this course.

All learning materials are provided.

This course is appropriate for learners aiming to build further networking skills required by Cyber Security practitioners.

You have the option to complete the assessment for the unit of competency VU21988 Utilise Basic Networking Concepts and Protocols Required in Cyber Security. VU21988 is a core unit in the Certificate IV in Cyber Security, therefore, upon successful completion you will automatically receive a credit transfer.

Alternatively, students who do not wish to complete the assessment can receive an ungraded participation mark.
