This is a short course for people who have a great business idea or a dream of being their own boss but don’t know where to begin.

Exploring Being Your Own Boss is a free program to eligible people. The Department of Employment, Skills, Small and Family Business fund the program and is delivered by the Box Hill Institute Business Enterprise Centre. If you participate, you’ll learn from experienced small business operators and trainers.

This ten-day course addresses the basics of how to establish your own small business. Through a series of workshops, you will gain the skills and confidence to turn your business idea into reality. We will support you to develop your business idea.

Being my own boss

Program outline

You’ll need to commit to studying for two weeks, five days a week. The course is held at our Box Hill or Melbourne CBD campus. 

Course topics

You will learn to:

  • understand the entrepreneurial mindset required
  • collect information for your business idea
  • develop your brand
  • understand your online presence
  • understand legal and taxation issues
  • identify opportunities in the community
  • use marketing channels
  • communicate with target customers
  • adapt to the changing pace of work


Who is eligible?

This short course is for people with a business idea and who may be:

  • 18 – 24 years old
  • Indigenous Australian
  • a refugee
  • a person with a disability
  • a retrenched worker
  • a person from culturally and linguistically diverse background
  • unemployed
  • not in education or training
