Our Business Enterprise Centre provides training, mentoring and general business advice to small businesses in Melbourne and in the Goulburn Murray Region in Victoria.

New Business Assistance with NEIS

New Enterprise Incentive Scheme

If you are keen to start your own business and if you are eligible, we can help you establish your own business through the New Business Assistance with NEIS.

In this scheme you will:

  • complete a nationally accredited qualification: BSB30315 Certificate III in Micro Business Operations
  • receive 39 weeks of income support (if eligible)
  • get Rental Assistance for up to 26 weeks (if eligible)
  • benefit from 12 months of mentoring from an experienced business mentor

New Business Assistance with NEIS is a government-funded program that assists eligible people set up viable small businesses. We are one of the largest providers of this program in Victoria and represent the Greater Melbourne Employment and Training Services (GRAMETS) consortium.

Certificate III in Micro Business

The Certificate III in Micro Business is an eight-week course (three days a week) covering:

  • Introduction to Small Business
  • Business Planning
  • Legal and Administrative Requirements
  • Marketing
  • Financial Planning
  • Operations Planning
  • Record-keeping

In Melbourne, the training is held mainly at our Box Hill or CBD campuses. We also run training in Wodonga, Benalla, Echuca, and Shepparton. We provide regional training through a flexible, blended learning model that is responsive to local needs.

Once you complete the training, you will develop a Business Plan and a Financial Plan for a viable business.

Who is eligible?

You can participate in New Business Assistance with NEIS if you:

  • live in one of the Box Hill Institutes service areas: Goulburn-Murray region, inner Metropolitan Melbourne, South Eastern Melbourne and Peninsula, or Western Melbourne
  • are at least 18 years of age
  • are permitted to work in Australia
  • are available to complete training and work full-time in your business
  • have not received New Business Assistance with NEIS Assistance in the past year
  • are not an undischarged bankrupt

Recipients of certain Department of Human Services or Department of Veterans’ Affairs pensions may be able to remain on these payments while participating in New Business Assistance with NEIS.

Business proposal

Your proposed business must:

  • not be operating on a commercial basis already
  • have an independent business structure
  • be lawful and capable of withstanding public scrutiny
  • be assessed as commercially viable
  • be established, located and operated solely within Australia
  • be structured so you have and will maintain a controlling interest over the NEIS business for the duration of your time in the scheme

How to apply

You must attend an information session to apply for a New Business Assistance with NEIS program and submit an application form. The information sessions are held every Friday at 10:00am in:

Exploring being my own boss

This is a short course for people who have a great business idea or a dream of being their own boss but don’t know where to begin.

Exploring Being Your Own Boss is a free program to eligable people. The Department of Employment, Skills, Small and Family Business fund the program and the Box Hill Institute Business Enterprise Centre delivers it. If you participate, you’ll learn from experienced small business operators and trainers.

This ten-day course addresses the basics of how to establish your own small business. Through a series of workshops, you will gain the skills and confidence to turn your business idea into reality. We will support you to develop your business idea.

Program outline

You’ll need to commit to studying for two weeks, five days a week. Following the course, we offer a complementary work placement to allow you to gain first-hand experience in running a small business. The course is held at our Box Hill or Melbourne CBD campus.

Course topics

You will learn to:

  • understand the entrepreneurial mindset required
  • collect information for your business idea
  • develop your brand
  • understand your online presence
  • understand legal and taxation issues
  • identify opportunities in the community
  • use marketing channels
  • communicate with target customers
  • adapt to the changing pace of work

Who is eligible?

This short course is for people with a business idea and who may be:

  • 18 – 24 years old
  • Indigenous Australian
  • a refugee
  • a person with a disability
  • a retrenched worker
  • a person from culturally and linguistically diverse background
  • unemployed
  • not in education or training
