Many applicants to our Music & Production courses are required to attend an Audition or Interview before successfully enroling.

Audition Process

Guitar / Bass

SCALES

You will be asked to play both a Major and Minor Scale and also a mode of your choice.

i.e. Dorian, Mixolydian, Lydian, Phrygian, Locrian.

*Both scales and the mode will need to be played over 2 octaves.

ARPEGGIO

You will need to demonstrate the ability to play a chord (triad) of your choice in an arpeggio form.

*The chord must be played over 2 octaves.

SIGHT READING

You will be provided with a simple 4 bar piece of music (melody line) in treble clef (or bass clef for bassists) that you will need to sight read and play at a minimum of 30 BPM (beats per minute).

*Melody will be within notes Middle C and F on the highest staff line for guitar, and low E to A at the top of the bass staff.

CHORDS

You will be provided with a simple 16 bar chord chart that you will need to demonstrate that you have the ability to play.

*Only open chords will be used.

** Piece will need to be played at minimum of 60 BPM.

IMPROVISATION

You will be asked to improvise of 2 of the 3 backing tracks. 

  • Track 1 is a I, vi, IV, V progression (C, Am, F, G)
  • Track 2 is a 12 bar blues I, IV, V progression (A, D, E)
  • Track 3 is a I, ii progression (D, Em)

PERFORMANCE

You will be asked to play two songs of your choice of any contrasting genres. This will be a great opportunity for you to display your skills on the guitar. Please feel free to bring accompanists, or backing tracks if you wish to play along with a prerecorded song.

Finally, you will be asked a few simple questions in relation to your music ambitions, course expectations and ambitions.

You are also encouraged to bring along any evidence that you may wish to show at the audition. These may consist of any recordings you may have done, YouTube clips, sound cloud performances, reviews etc.

Piano / Keyboard

SCALES

You will be asked to play both a Major and Minor Scale and also a mode of your choice, in the key of your choice.

i.e. Dorian, Mixolydian, Lydian, Phrygian, Locrian.

*Both scales and the mode will need to be played over 4 octaves and no less than 80 BPM (beats per minute).

** For Cert III/IV, auditionees can play over 2 octaves

ARPEGGIO

You will need to demonstrate the ability to play a chord (triad) of your choice in an arpeggio form.

*The chord must be played over 4 octaves.

** For Cert III/IV, auditionees can play over 2 octaves

SIGHT READING

You will be provided with a simple 4 bar piece of music in the grand stave that you will need to sight read and play at a minimum of 40 BPM (Beats per minute).

*Keys will have no more than two sharps or flats.

** For Cert III/IV, auditionees can play only one hand at a time

CHORDS

You will be provided with a simple 16 bar chord chart that you will need to demonstrate that you have the ability to play.

*Only triad chords will be used. Though demonstration of 7th Chords and extended chords are encouraged

** Piece will need to be played at minimum of 60 BPM.

You will be asked to improvise of 2 of the 3 backing tracks. 

  • Track 1 is a I, vi, IV, V progression (C, Am, F, G)
  • Track 2 is a 12 bar blues I, IV, V progression (A, D, E)
  • Track 3 is a I, ii progression (D, Em)

This will be a great opportunity for you to display your skills on the piano/keyboard. Please feel free to bring accompanists, or backing tracks if you wish to play along with a prerecorded song.

You are also encouraged to bring along any evidence that you may wish to show at the audition. These may consist of any recordings you may have done, YouTube clips, sound cloud performances, reviews etc.

Voice

SCALES

You will be asked to sing both a Major and Minor Scale (harmonic, natural or melodic)

and also a mode of your choice.

i.e. Dorian, Mixolydian, Lydian, Phrygian, Locrian.

*Both scales and the mode will need to be over 1 octave starting on your preferred note of choice

**Can be sung in either Solfége (Sol-fa) or as a vowel tone

ARPEGGIO

You will need to demonstrate the ability to sing a chord (major/minor/or diminished).

*The chord must be sung over 2 octaves.

SIGHT READING

You will be provided with a simple 4 bar piece of music (melody line) in treble clef that you will need to sight read and sing at a minimum of 40 BPM (Beats per minute).

*Melody will be within notes Middle C and F on the highest staff line.

IMPROVISATION

You will be asked to improvise over a simple progression played live on a piano, (F major to G minor) in a Latin feel, this will be 2 bars of each chord repeated.

PERFORMANCE

CALL AND RESPONSE

The auditioner will sing 2 bar phrases with a groove and the candidate will have to echo each line.

This is the quickest and best way to assess your current pitch and rhythmic skills. 

PLAYING

You will be asked to sing two songs of your choice of any contrasting genres. This will be a great opportunity for you to display your skills as a vocalist. Please feel free to bring accompanists, or backing tracks if you wish to play along with a prerecorded song.

Finally, you will be asked a few simple questions in relation to your music ambitions, course expectations and ambitions.

You are also encouraged to bring along any evidence that you may wish to show at the audition. These may consist of any recordings you may have done, YouTube clips, SoundCloud performances, reviews etc.

Drums

RUDIMENTS:

Students should be able to play through Single Stroke Roll, Double Stroke Roll and Paradiddles in 16th notes between Crotchet = 100 to 120 for 4 to 8 bars.

SIGHT READING:

Students are required to demonstrate their understanding of rhythmic counting by undertaking a basic sight reading test.

DYNAMICS:

Play through a song form with appropriate volume, style, dynamic elements and drum fills for the genre/type of music.

GENRES:

Play at least a range of 3 varied beats/styles of different genres (g. Rock, Disco, Funk, Metal, Jazz, Latin, Swing, Shuffle etc.)

IMPROVISATION

You will be asked to improvise of 2 of the 3 backing tracks.

  • Track 1 is a simple pop progression (C, Am, F, G) – 3 MB
  • Track 2 is a 12 bar blues progression (A, D, E) – 3 MB
  • Track 3 is a 2 chord rock progression (D, Em) – 3 MB

You will be asked to play two songs of your choice of any contrasting genres. This will be a great opportunity for you to display your skills on the drums. Please feel free to bring accompanists, or backing tracks if you wish to play along with a prerecorded song.

Finally, you will be asked a few simple questions in relation to your music ambitions, course expectations and ambitions.

Interview Information

Audio & Sound Production

Interview Information

Applicants to any Audio & Sound Production course must attend an interview (approx 20 minutes) and present a folio of works.

The selection interview will be a verbal assessment of your aptitude for Audio Production through a series of questions which include analysing your experience and portfolio.

The portfolio can contain any combination of the following: recorded pieces, demo tracks, recommendations, testimonials, statement of results, compositions and any other supporting evidence you believe is relevant to the application.

Applicants to Bachelor courses must also sit a musicianship theory test. Applicants who do not meet the entry-level musicianship theory test but meet all other entry requirements may be invited to attend an intensive Summer School course during December.

Hip Hop

Interview Information

All applicants applying for a Hip Hop course must attend an interview.

Your interview will be a discussion on your skills and passion for Hip Hop music, and an introduction to the requirements of the program.

We suggest that you bring supporting evidence of your work and profile.  This can include press shots, a bio, examples of your music (MP3, YouTube, SoundCloud etc.).

Applicants who are unable to meet the entry requirements can complete an intensive preparation program and then enter the Diploma.

Interview Information

Applicants for our Music Industry course must attend an interview to determine your suitability for the course.

During your interview, you will be asked to present testimonials and extra-curricular evidence to support your application. Applicants who have participated in FReeZa programs are highly regarded.

A musicianship theory test is not required for this course.
