2015 Victorian Training Awards

Box Hill Institute at the Victorian Training Awards

Box Hill Institute was proud to be finalists in multiple categories for this year’s Victorian Training Awards. We would like to congratulate all of this year’s winners, including Box Hill Institute student Marlon Young-Healy, who won the inaugural Community Choice Award.

A new award established by Minister for Training and Skills Steve Herbert, the Community Choice Award put the decision-making power in the hands of the public, enabling eligible voters to determine Marlon as the overall winner from four shortlisted nominees. These nominees had been judged by the Department of Education and Training to be the best in the state for 2015.

Marlon, who is studying a Certificate III in Carpentry at Box Hill Institute, had also been nominated for Victorian Apprentice of the Year.

Norman Gray AM, CEO of Box Hill Institute said, “Marlon’s achievement in winning the Community Choice Award shows that dedication and following your passion pays off. On behalf of all our staff and students, I congratulate Marlon on his outstanding achievement.”

The community were undoubtedly inspired by Marlon’s unique story.

Upon completing Year 12, he chose to study Theology with the view of becoming a Franciscan brother so that he could help people through missionary work.

While a more academic pathway was unfolding, Marlon was instead drawn to learning a trade “because it offered a very physical challenge, dynamic work environments and the opportunity to develop a diverse range of skills.”

Studying a Certificate III in Carpentry at Box Hill Institute immediately opened up opportunities for Marlon. Within a year, he was in East Timor taking part in a project to build housing for abused and vulnerable women.

“The Timor Leste experience has been the most rewarding aspect of my course. It provided great insight into mission work and allowed me to merge my Carpentry studies with my Theological research in a very unique way” said Marlon.

Post apprenticeship, Marlon plans to work as a sub-contractor while continuing to support projects overseas with his wife and daughter.
