A Cut Above the Rest

17 November 2021

Jobs Victoria and Box Hill Institute, with their industry partners, have launched their partnership to provide the opportunity to train for a Certificate III in Barbering (SHB30516) or Certificate III in Hairdressing (SHB30416), to 75 people, and be industry apprentices.

The program involves the ability to earn while you learn, free training, mentorship from day one, masterclasses and support at every level from Box Hill Institute.

“Through this partnership with Jobs Victoria, we’re so excited to give more Victorians the opportunity to find secure jobs, and continue earning while they learn.” Says Box Hill Institute CEO and Managing Director Vivienne King.

Recently, Minister for Employment Jaala Pulford visited one of the program participants, Chiara and the salon supporting the apprenticeship, Ohana Hairdressing

“Victorians rushed out to the hairdressers when COVID restrictions eased and demand from new workers is now so high in this industry.” Says Minister for Employment Jaala Pulford.

Feeling Supported

Excited to be working, apprentice and program participant, Chiara feels supported in the industry that she loves. Through the program she’s addressed the challenges to continued employment, has relished in the support and guidance from the mentorship, and grown her industry confidence.

As part of the program, Box Hill Institute are investing in each individual involved to ensure they have a chance to succeed. In addition to the learning the skills that they need, there is individual mentoring from day one, assistance and support from Box Hill Institute at every level. Individuals in the program receive a workplace toolkit for the studies, an apprenticeship, and an opportunity to earn while they learn.

“I’ve found the program to be useful in helping gain confidence, receiving the necessary support to build my skills and to be ready for employment,” says Chiara.

Emerging from COVID

Many hairdressers left the workforce during the pandemic and the industry is now facing a worker shortage.

“As we emerge from the COVID lockdowns, eager talent is essential to our customer experience. The great program with Box Hill Institute and Jobs Victoria has supported us to continue to aid the ongoing education programs that require us to be at the industry’s forefront.” Says Ohana Salon Owner, Olivia Zynevych

With the challenge many have faced over the last 18 months, the program will continue into 2022 and Box Hill Institute will help apprentices and employers recapture their vision, purpose and assist with mapping a brighter future ahead.
