Box Hill Institute student Paul Morgan has won the coveted “Drafting Excellence by a Student” award at the Building Designers Association of Victoria’s 2016 Building Design Awards.
On Saturday 30th July in front of over 300 building designers, students, teachers and supporters, Paul’s detailed construction drawings were acknowledged as the best student drawings across all Victorian TAFEs for the Advanced Diploma of Building Design (Architectural).
Paul completed his study in July this year, scoring distinctions across every aspect of the course. His final year studies involved designing and documenting an eight-storey, cross-laminated timber building.
Paul says that winning the award was a fantastic moment. “Before I started at Box Hill Institute I didn’t know the first thing about drafting or building design. Fast forward two and half years later, I’m now qualified and working full time in the industry, loving what I do.”
Like over 90% of his student group, Paul was able to secure employment in the last months of his studies. He is now Building Information Modelling (BIM) Content Creator and Documenter with architects’ Bates Smart, where his outstanding skills are put to great use on commercial projects.
“Box Hill gave me an amazing platform on which to grow and develop, including traveling to Canada to further my experiences, as well as extensive training in Autodesk Revit (BIM software) which has been valuable to my work at Bates Smart on large scale projects”.
In making their decision, the Building Designers Association of Victoria (BDAV) judges made mention of how impressed they were with Paul’s substantially detailed set of working drawings, saying:
“…it was the clarity, detail and presentation in his working drawings that was outstanding. They can be easily interpreted with clear headings, labelling and methodically placed layouts. The sections and detailed plans demonstrate a high level of understanding in the materials, processes and construction.”
Paul is rightly proud of his achievement. “All my hard work and dedication was recognised, giving me more drive than ever to push further and achieve more going into the future.
I have to give a big thank you to all my teachers at Box Hill Institute for their ongoing support and mentoring throughout my time studying. There is no way I’d be here without them.”
