Dangerous Designs - Paul Morgan

Paul Morgan’s dedication to the art of architecture has won him numerous awards while studying at Box Hill Institute. One of these was the Dangerous Design Award voted by a panel of leading architects and designers. Dangerous Designs promotes the use of wood and wood products in sustainable design. Paul’s winning entry, Laevo Cross Apartments was a functional solution to a real-world problem, i.e. sustainable and lower cost housing using cross-laminated timber.

Paul also won the coveted Drafting Excellence by a Student Award at the Building Designers Association of Victoria’s 2016 Building Design Awards, which led to his hiring by Bates Smart Architect, a month before completing his studies.

Paul said, “Before I started at Box Hill Institute, I didn’t know the first thing about drafting or building design. Fast forward two and half years later and I’m now qualified and working full time in the industry, loving what I do.”

“Box Hill Institute gave me an amazing platform on which to grow and develop, including travelling to Canada to further my experiences and extensive training in Autodesk Revit (architectural software), which has been invaluable to my work at Bates Smart on large-scale projects,” he said.

In making their decision, the Building Designers Association of Victoria judges made mention of how impressed they were with Paul’s substantially detailed set of working drawings saying, “…it was the clarity, detail and presentation in his working drawings that was outstanding… The sections and detailed plans demonstrate a high level of understanding in the materials, processes and construction.”

Paul has returned to Box Hill Institute teaching architectural software to the Advanced Diploma of Building Design students while he continues his studies through a Bachelor of Architecture at Melbourne University.
