From Hospitality to Cyber Security

2021-05-11

Vanessa Alvarez studied hospitality and spent eight years working in the industry, rising to VIP Services Coordinator for Crown Resorts before deciding on a career change. Through Free TAFE, she enrolled in the Certificate IV in Cyber Security at Box Hill Institute. She said, "I think it's amazing that we have the opportunity to explore new paths and gain new skills."

Inspired by the many types of computer crimes and the different specialist areas, Vanessa was attracted by the chance to make a real impact and the opportunity to solve and analyse complex problems. She said, "This industry is constantly changing, which makes an exciting career choice or career change, plus there is plenty of opportunities in different areas."

Vanessa was thrilled with her teachers at Box Hill Institute and said they were very supportive and adaptable. She said, "In 2019, I was pregnant, and the support from teachers and classmates was a highlight."

With state of the art facilities, Vanessa learned in a simulated setting and had 24/7 remote access, which made life a little easier for students.

Now that Vanessa and her colleagues have completed the course, they are well equipped for cyber security work. Vanessa is hoping to continue to develop her skills in the industry and rise to expert level. We wish her all the best in achieving her goals.
