Catherine Pinolo is studying her Certificate III in Hospitality (SIT30616) as part of the Team TAFE School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships Program (SBATS) at Box Hill Institute. She is also a current Year 11 student at Vermont Secondary College.
Catherine decided to study hospitality to improve and develop her skills set. She said, “The best thing about studying at Box Hill Institute are the teachers and the adult learning environment.”
SBATS provides students with the opportunity to experience working in front of house and back of house roles, which may include working in the kitchen or behind the bar, front of house, and waiting on customers.
As part of the program, Catherine has successfully obtained a Responsible Serving of Alcohol (RSA). She said, “I have really enjoyed cooking and working behind the bar, which are two of my favourite areas.”
Balancing school, TAFE and work is a bit of a challenge for Catherine, and she says being organised and having good time management skills is crucial for success. Although Catherine has set her mind on eventually becoming a hairdresser, she said, “This course has given me valuable skills that I can use in the future.”
