Audition requirements – Musical Theatre
The audition for this course consists of three sections in which applicants will audition for all three disciplines in acting, dance and voice.
Applicants are asked to wear appropriate dance wear to the audition and dance shoes if available, and are encouraged to have physically warmed up prior to the audition. (Dance studio will be available from 9am)
Applicants must prepare two contrasting music theatre songs (up-tempo and ballad.) Songs need to be from a stage show. Songs from movie “musicals” (i.e. Happy Feet…) will not be accepted.
Applicants must prepare a 1-2 minute monologue. A list of suggested monologues will be provided prior to the audition date.
We run workshops to assist you develop your skills to be successful at auditions. It includes preparation, presentation, and selection of material.
You will achieve the unit of competence CUAPRF304 Develop Audition Techniques and receive a Statement of Attainment.
Applicants will participate in a short warm up demonstrating prior knowledge of dance safe practices. In addition applicants are encouraged to have physically warmed up prior to the audition.
Applicants will then learn and perform two basic dance combinations with an emphasis on jazz technique and musical theatre style. The dance audition component will be conducted in small groups.
Applicants must perform two prepared, contrasting music theatre songs (up-tempo, ballad), songs need to be from a stage show. Songs from movie “musicals” (i.e. Happy Feet) will not be accepted. The voice audition will be individual. Ideally the singer will demonstrate a contemporary and a more traditional music theatre song (pre/post 1960). Finally, the applicant might be asked to do a short vocal ability test if required (i.e. scales, arpeggios, etc…).
Applicants must perform a prepared 1-2 minute monologue. You must have memorised your monologue. A list of suggested monologues will be provided prior to the audition date. Applicants will also participate in group activities.
