Frequently Asked Questions

Can anyone become a pilot?

To hold a pilot’s license, you will not only need to be pass the necessary theory exams and flight tests, but you will also need to hold a CASA medical certificate. You need to have good mathematics skills and English-language ability, an understanding of basic mechanics, as well as a strong concept of the principles of aerodynamics that relate to aircraft control and function while the plane is in flight. Progress and success in the course is dependent on attitude, aptitude, determination, student progression, student availability and of course the weather!



Are there any age restrictions?

All students need to be at least 18 years of age to enrol.



How long does the course take?

The AVI50219 Diploma of Aviation (Commercial Pilot License - Aeroplane) course offers students the flexibility of studying over a 24-month intensive program (two ground theory evening sessions per week, along with two flight bookings per week). Students will need to have availability to fly on weekdays and weekends. Actual time to complete the course may vary based upon student progression and weather conditions.



What payment options are available?

Box Hill Institute, The AVI50219 Diploma of Aviation (Commercial Pilot License - Aeroplane) course may be able to offer VET Student Loans to eligible students. To find out if you are eligible, contact the Box Hill Institute Financial Support for Students or the VET Student Loan Department directly.



What do I need to do in order to enrol?

Notify BHI of your expression of interest in enrolling into the course, Obtain an ARN (Aviation Reference Number) for course entry, students must obtain a CASA Class 1 medical for Stage 1 and must be maintained and current throughout the course. Unique Student Identifier (USI), and obtain an Aviation Security Identification Card (ASIC) in order to fly an aircraft.
