Advanced Welder Training Centre

Our Advanced Welder Training Centre is equipped with the latest augmented reality simulators to allow students to use best practice technology and quality systems in a hands on environment. It was developed in collaboration with Weld Australia, which represents Australian welding professionals, and it will help address an Australian shortage of qualified and skilled welders.

Our simulated automotive workshop

In our purpose-built automotive workshop located at our Elgar Campus, you’ll experience a study environment that’s just like a real workplace. Except of course your teachers will guide you as you learn practical skills from changing oil to taking engines apart and putting them back together again. As an international student or an apprentice, you’ll be confident getting your hands dirty on the tools or using the latest technology to exceed employer expectations.

Learn barbering in a real life environment. Box Hill Institute have a barbershop conveniently located at Elgar campus. Work directly with paying clients, learn how to run a barber shop and practice the art of cutting hair and barbering. At Box Hill Institute Barbershop, we offer mens haircuts, shaves, and grooming, all for only $5. The barbershop is open to the students, employees and the public on term weekdays from 9am – 4pm.

Biosecurity Centre

Box Hill Institute has collaborated with local industry to provide students the latest technology, research and resources in one centre to guide students in their careers – Protect our food supply, our native plants and animals, and help protect our natural ecosystems. The Centre provides training and facilitates research that aims to protect Australia’s food, farming and agriculture industries, and our environment. Based at our Lilydale Lakeside campus, the Biosecurity Centre is in close proximity to the Yarra Valley agricultural industry, Melbourne’s main water catchment area, and the Yarra Ranges National Park.

Creative Design Hub

Box Hill Institute’s Creative Design Hub, located at our Nelson Campus, provides first-class leadership by showcasing best practices, support, and training in the vibrant world of design. The space offers photography and graphic design students the ability to collaborate with aspiring fashion designers, and includes sewing rooms, patternmaking tables, CAD rooms and a photographic studio.

Cyber Security Operations Centre (Training)

Our Cyber Security Operations Centre (Training CSOC) provides you with the opportunity to work in a simulated setting, designed by industry. In our Training CSOC you’ll experience a study environment that is just like the workplace. Our Training CSOC also features NETLAB, state of the art equipment with 24/7 access allowing you to remotely control real physical equipment in a sandbox environment. The Training CSOC was developed in collaboration with the state government and the Victorian based cyber security industry. 


Flowers on Elgar

Develop your designs and learn hands on floristry skills in Box Hill Institute's very own floristry retail outlet. Flowers on Elgar partner with Interflora and deliver special orders for functions, weddings and special occasions. Learn how to make bunches, bouquets, and boxed arrangements and retail skills on how to run your own florist.

Hair and Beauty Salon

Students studying at Box Hill Institute get to practice in a hands-on real life environment and perform variety of hair and beauty services from haircuts and colour, facials and spray tans. Study in a working day spa completing services for paying clients including manicures, waxing, hot stone massage, facials, and more. Our salons are located at both our Elgar and Lilydale Lakeside Campuses.

Lilydale Nallei Jerring Nyerboing Trades Centre

Box Hill Institute has opened a $10.2 million trades training centre at its Lilydale Lakeside campus to deliver industry-current apprenticeship training in wood, electrical, plumbing and automotive trades.

The new, purpose-built, flexibly designed facility will provide the Yarra Ranges and surrounding areas with training opportunities, addressing key gaps in the education and training available in the region, which has an increasing demand for skilled workers.

The Trades Centre delivers industry-current apprenticeship training in wood, electrical, automotive and plumbing trades, providing the region with a range of training opportunities around sustainable construction practices and technologies.

Innovative training on the core trades of carpentry, plumbing and electrical focus on sustainability, future skill needs and employability skills. Training in prefabricated timber construction and cross laminated timber (CLT) are delivered in an adaptable classroom layout with open areas between plumbing, electrical, automotive and carpentry, and significant indoor and outdoor workspaces to enable off-site and on-site construction activities that are integral to the success of the model.

Integrated Technology Hub

Box Hill Institute’s $41 million Integrated Technology Hub, located at our Elgar Campus, provides collaborative and innovative learning spaces for the air conditioning, refrigeration, mechanical, plumbing and electrical technologies industries. This world class facility is housed in a 5 star environmentally friendly accredited building and its programs are aligned to industry requirements.

Lilydale Gym

The Lilydale campus gym is set up to reflect fitness industry standards. It is typical of boutique style personal training studios with a mixture of resistance machines, barbells and dumbbells. The Lilydale gym has an emphasis on resistance training, but also has exercise bikes and grinders for cardio programs. The nearby Lillydale Lake has great outdoor facilities for outdoor personal training sessions.

Music Facilities & Student Experience

The new Nelson Campus music facility includes a range of recording studios, film production suites, practice rooms, and a flexible 250-seat performance space. Acoustics and audio visual engineering company, Hanson Associates has provided fully integrated engineering solutions including studio design, vibration isolation, auditorium acoustics, noise control, and production systems.

Nelson Gym

The Nelson campus gym is set up to reflect fitness industry standards. It is typical of boutique style personal training studios with a mixture of resistance machines, plyometric boxes, a rig for deadlifts and squats, resistance balls and bands, weights, battling ropes, and climbing ropes. The gym has an emphasis on functional training, but also has spin bikes and rowing machines for cardio programs.

Nursing Skills Centre

Our cutting-edge nursing training facilities at Box Hill and Lilydale campuses are well equipped with a high-tech simulation facility and advanced medical equipment to deliver practical, theoretical, online learning and skills development laboratories. Nursing students learn in real life simulated patient situations. On a day-to-day basis, each session in the Nursing Skills Centre has a minimum of two dedicated staff. This includes the Simulation Technical Officer (STO) operating the computer program and a facilitator working with students and liaising with the STO. These highly trained staff members are in constant contact and collaborate with briefing and debriefing sessions.

Pets on Elgar

Pets on Elgar is veterinary clinic and training workplace for veterinary nursing and pet grooming students. Students have the opportunity to interact with pet owners and animals under supervision. Services include annual health checks, vaccinations, microchipping, minor surgical procedures, hydrobathing, and pet grooming (dogs, cats, rabbits).
