Joseph Speziale – Cyber Security
AISA Cyber Security Trainee of the Year
Certificate IV in Information Technology (Specialising in Cyber Security)
I was fascinated and excited to be learning something I liked
Box Hill Institute student Joseph Speziale recently won the Australian Information Security Association’s Cyber Security Trainee of the Year award presented at the National Conference Gala Awards dinner. The awards recognise and promote excellence, innovation and professionalism in the area of information security by individuals.
Joseph is studying Certificate IV in Information Technology (Specialising in Cyber Security), which he will complete in 2017. He has come a long way from where he started, forever modifying his home computer network, which led him to an interest in IT security. After gaining as much information as he could online, he decided to pursue his interest through a course.
Joseph said, “I struggled a bit to understand the fundamentals at the start, trying to unlearn the incorrect ways I’d learned through self-teaching. But with every hurdle I had, I was fascinated and excited to be learning something I liked and tried to go over and above what was asked for my own benefit.”
Joseph went beyond the course curriculum to examine cyber security vulnerability in smartphones delivering a class presentation with support from his teacher. He said, “In that regard the course was not what I expected because we’re encouraged, but not required, to do anything relevant to understand and learn about cyber security, which is amazing.”
Now undertaking a Security Traineeship at NAB, Joseph will get to undertake a range of security activities. Originally interesting in malware reverse engineering, he said he will wait until the end of his traineeship to make an informed decision about where he wants his career to take him.
As for studying at Box Hill Institute, Joseph said, “I feel privileged to be a part of this course and excited to continue my studies. The best thing about Box Hill Institute is by far the instructors and the support network for the students. They’re passionate, extremely knowledgeable and they really push you to do the best you can do.”
