Do you want to make a difference to the experience of hospital patients? Get started in this rewarding career with our health services assistance course. In this course you will learn the skills and knowledge to work as a health services assistant within a hospital environment.  

In this health course, you will gain the skills and knowledge to undertake tasks such as: 

  • maintaining a high standard of infection prevention and control 
  • following workplace health and safety procedures 
  • correctly making patient beds
  • cleaning hospital rooms and maintain wards
  • handling medical gases
  • assisting with the moving and transporting of patients within the hospital environment 
  • interpreting and using correct medical terminology

Entry Requirements


You must:

  • have good spoken English
  • have good communication skills
  • have access to a computer 
  • be capable of performing physical work

Prior to attending placement you must have:

  • a current National Police Check
  • a Working With Children Check
  • Healthcare Workers 'Schedule A' immunisations

PRE-TRAINING REVIEW - to assist prospective students to determine whether a course is suitable and appropriate for the individual needs, Box Hill Institute will assess all students’ language, literacy and numeracy and digital literacy by asking you to undertake a self-assessment review prior to the enrolment. A course advisor will discuss the outcomes of the review and make recommendations about whether the course is suitable for you, and identify additional support where required.

Pathways & Accreditation


After successful completion, you may wish to apply for entry into other related course areas such as operating theatre technician, individual support (ageing) or nursing. 

This course is government accredited and has national recognition

The qualification is aligned with the Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) level 3

Course Structure


Completion of 15 units of competency. 

In addition, you will be offered 40 hours of work placement with one of our hospital partners. This opportunity is organised by our Industry Engagement & Placement Coordinator and takes place at the end of your course.
