What are policies and procedures?

Policies are relatively short statements explaining Box Hill Institute’s position on important issues. Procedures detail the step-by-step processes associated with the implementation of these policies.

How do policies and procedures affect students?

Policies and procedures not only outline the rights and responsibilities of students but also Box Hill Institute’s responsibilities to students. Policies and procedures affecting students range from student selection to student assessment.

Child Safety

BHI Group is committed to child safety. We have specific policies, procedures and training in place that supports all employees to achieve the following commitments.

  • Preventing child abuse, identifying risks early, and removing and reducing these risks. We have zero tolerance of child abuse, and all allegations and safety concerns will be treated very seriously and consistently with our robust policies and procedures.
  • Complying with our legal and moral obligations to contact authorities when we are worried about a child’s safety.
  • The cultural safety of Aboriginal children, the cultural safety of children from culturally and/or linguistically diverse backgrounds, and to providing a safe environment for children with a disability.
  • The safety, participation and empowerment of all students, including children.
  • Regularly training and educating our employees, contractors and volunteers on child abuse risks

Learner Rights and Box Hill Institute Obligations

It is the responsibility of the Institute to inform learners in writing, as soon as practicable, of any changes to the Institute that may impact on the agreed training services with the learner.  Changes may include (but not limited to) the appointment of a new CEO, entering into partnership for a third party to provide the training services or changes to an existing partnership where training services are being provided by another organisation.

Student Right of Complaint

If a student would like to escalate a problem or complaint outside the institution, you can contact the Victorian Ombudsman to seek further assistance.

The Ombudsman investigates complaints made against staff who work for government departments, statutory authorities and local councils. The Ombudsman has a team of experienced enquiry and investigation officers who handle enquiries and complaints received by the office.  There is a Student Grievance Policy, which can be followed as a first point of call.

Student Code of Conduct

The Student Code of Conduct applies to all students across the Box Hill Institute and CAE community and aims to ensure the safety, comfort and well-being of everyone at the Institute.
Ensure your actions and words support teaching and learning:

  • Be punctual and meet all attendance requirements, submit your own words truthfully and on time.
  • Follow your teacher’s instructions in regard to mobile phone use in class.

Respect yourself and others:

  • Harassment, vilification, bullying including cyber bullying, physical, psychological, sexual abuse including child abuse, and verbal assault is not acceptable and will not be tolerated.
  • You must not use information and communication technologies, such as email, mobile phones, text or instant messaging and websites to engage in behaviour that could reasonably be considered to have a negative impact on another person, cause them harm, or make them feel unsafe.
  • Respect the right to privacy and the property of others including their intellectual property.
  • Be free from the influence of alcohol and/or drugs on campus. Students under the influence will be requested to leave the Institute.
  • Illegal activities will be referred to the police.
  • Refrain from smoking in all campus buildings and grounds, or littering or damaging, stealing or misusing any Institute property.
  • Comply with Box Hill Institute and CAE policies and procedures.

Breaches of the Student Code of Conduct may result in action according to Institute policies and procedures including the Student Conduct Management Policy.
