Certificate III in Health Services Assistance, Operating Theatre Technician
After high school, Beatrice (Bea) Hennessy wanted to work while she explored her career and study options in nursing.
While looking for jobs at her local hospital, she found a role that required a Certificate III in Health Services Assistance. It led her to Box Hill Institute for six months of study.
“It was a perfect fit for me. After the first semester, I was ready to start my clinical placement at the Austin Hospital,” Bea says. “About two months after I completed my certificate, I’d been offered two positions there!”
Bea started worked in the Paediatric and Adolescent Ward as a Patient Services Assistant as well as in the hospital bank. “The bank is a pool of temporary workers available to meet changing staff needs. It meant I could experience different wards and see how a nurse’s role can vary.”
In 2018, Bea started a Diploma of Nursing at Australian Catholic University while she continued working at the Austin in the Paediatric and Adolescent Ward. “I really like the workplace, and it’s really helped to talk with the nurses about their different roles.”
After completing the first year of her diploma, Bea has put her studies on hold to complete a specialist short course, Operating Theatre Technician course at Box Hill Institute.
“I’d like to work in theatre for a while, and I need this qualification to do so,” Bea explains. “I may go back to nursing, but for now, I’m going to see where this leads.”
