Located 14 kilometres east of Melbourne City, the Elgar campus can be found on Elgar Rd in Box Hill.

Located 14 kilometres east of Melbourne City, the Nelson campus is the second location in Box Hill situated on Whitehorse Road.

Located 15 kilometres east of Melbourne City, the Whitehorse campus can be found on Whitehorse Road in Box Hill.

Our CBD campus is co-located with the Centre for Adult Education in the heart of Melbourne&rsquo;s Central Business District.

Our Lakeside Lilydale campus serves the local community as an active learning centre with a range of vocational and higher education courses. The campus is also home to the Yarra Ranges Tech School.

Since he was a kid, Lachlan has enjoyed working with hands&mdash;building and fixing things. &ldquo;I loved Lego!&rdquo; he says. So pursuing a career where he can, &ldquo;build, wire and test stuff&hellip;that really appeals to me&hellip;as opposed to just making money.&rdquo;
Lachlan is currently doing his electrotechnology pre-apprenticeship, officially called the Certificate II in Electrotechnology (Pre-vocational) at Box Hill Institute. His dad, who is an electrician, inspired him to choose this path.
Naturally, his favourite part of the course is being in the workshop. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s been really enjoyable getting to do the hands-on stuff.&rdquo;
Apart from that, he cites the community-like environment at Box Hill Institute. &ldquo;The teachers have all been great. They&rsquo;re all really lovely and really nice to you. It&rsquo;s also nice to meet other blokes who are like-minded.&rdquo;
According to him, his teachers are genuinely invested in his future. &ldquo;Even though I&rsquo;m here to do a pre-app, they&rsquo;re all focused on &lsquo;how can we get you an apprenticeship?&rsquo; and &lsquo;how can we make you into the best sparky?&rsquo;&rdquo; In one instance, his instructor was supportive when he has to leave class for a job interview.
When it comes to practising his skills, Lachlan has found the emphasis on safety the most valuable thing he&rsquo;s learnt. &ldquo;Electrical, obviously is one of the more dangerous trades. And I&rsquo;ve been taught that there might be a best way, but the safest way is more important,&rdquo; he says.
What are Lachlan&rsquo;s career goals? &ldquo;Well, I&rsquo;d like to finish my apprenticeship in the lift industry and then upskill so that I&rsquo;m sort of able to work in lots of different areas.&rdquo;

The Certificate II in Electrotechnology (Pre-vocational) will teach you electrical wiring skills, how to use tools, the equipment of the electrical trade plus an introduction to basic air-conditioning systems.
