About the course

The Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) is funded by the Australian Government Department of Home Affairs.  It helps eligible migrants and refugees improve their English language skills and settle into Australia.

If you are confident with general English, then this EAL course is perfect for you. This course will assist to improve your English speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. By the end of this course, you will be able to use common idioms and phrases, listen and respond with confidence in daily matters and read a series of more complicated texts.

And if you're an eligible Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) client, you can access unlimited hours of English classes until you reach a vocational level of English without paying course fees. You can apply, even if you have enrolled in the AMEP before and have been living in Australia for many years.

  • Full time: 1 year (4 days a week 9:30 am to 3pm)
  • Part time: options available (the time taken to complete this course will vary depending on your input)

  • in the classroom or online
  • daytime or evening classes
  • on Saturdays
  • in general English or special focus classes

Entry Requirements


There are no pre-requisites for entry into this course.  However, you must:
  • register with AMEP Box Hill Institute
  • undergo an Initial Assessment (IA) prior to be accepted to the program
 
The entry point against the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) is exit Level 2.

Pathways & Accreditation


Successful completion will enable you to study in a range of certificate IV vocational courses at Box Hill Institute. You may also wish to enrol in our SLPET Program (Settlement Language Pathways to Employment and Training). 

This course is government accredited and has national recognition

The qualification is aligned with the Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) level 3

Course Structure


To successfully complete this course, you must complete a total of 8 units comprising:

  • 1 core unit
  • 1 speaking and listening unit
  • 1 reading and writing unit
  • 2 language skills elective units which can be selected from speaking and listening and / or reading and writing units which have not been previously completed from:
    • this qualification
    • Certificate II, III and IV qualifications in this EAL Framework
  • 3 electives which can be selected from the:
    • general electives listed in this qualification
    • general electives listed in the Certificate II, III and IV qualifications in this EAL Framework
    • units / modules which are first packaged in AQF level 2, 3 or 4 qualifications in other accredited curricula and / or endorsed training packages
