Are you passionate about using your lived experience with mental health to assist others? The Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work equips you with the skills to support wellbeing promotion in mental health services. Throughout this course, delivered by experienced facilitators, you'll engage in workplace practice scenarios to enhance your capabilities.

Upon completing this course, you'll be prepared for roles in various mental health settings, including residential facilities, outreach programs, and peer support initiatives. The curriculum is designed to reflect the role of individuals with personal experience of mental illness, whether as a consumer or carer, who work alongside professionals in mental health services.

By enrolling in the Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work, you'll gain practical insights and learn valuable techniques to empower others on their mental health journey. The program includes a mandatory 80 hour work placement, which will be discussed in detail during a "Preparation for Practice" session prior to placement.

Entry Requirements


You must be 18 year or over. In order to maximise your chance of success in this program, you must be able to demonstrate adequate language, literacy and numeracy skills.

Inherent Requirements:

  • Lived experience of Mental Health Recovery

Desirable (but not essential) skills include:

  • good interpersonal skills
  • an understanding of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) - find out more here
  • the ability to communicate across various culturally diverse groups and faiths
  • trustworthiness and ability to use empathy
  • the ability to reflect upon on and understand your own emotional responses to studying and working in the mental health environment
  • excellent organisation skills

Industry Entry Requirements:

To be eligible to undertake work placement, you must provide evidence of the following:

  • current Working With Children (WWC) check (volunteer), where required working with young people 
  • current National Police Check with no disclosable outcomes listed (this may be requested)
  • full current vaccination against COVID-19  
  • your reasons for wanting to study this program
  • confirmation of having lived experience of a mental health issue and recovery, or as a carer of a person with lived experience of a mental health issue (specific details not required)

Note: Disclosable outcomes do not automatically exclude a student from participation in the CHC43115 Certificate IV in Mental Health.  Disclosable outcomes will be reviewed by Box Hill Institute and the Service in which the student is undertaking their practical placement. 

Students must be advised that the mental health course content can at times be of a confronting or distressing nature.  Stable management of mental health or other health issues prior to enrolment is important for success in this course.  

PRE-TRAINING REVIEW - to assist prospective students to determine whether a course is suitable and appropriate for the individual needs, Box Hill Institute will assess all students’ language, literacy and numeracy and digital literacy by asking you to undertake a self-assessment review prior to the enrolment. A course advisor will discuss the outcomes of the review and make recommendations about whether the course is suitable for you, and identify additional support where required.

Pathways & Accreditation


Following successful completion of this mental health course you can apply for entry into the BHI Diploma of Mental Health or the BHI Diploma of Community Services. 

This course is government accredited and has national recognition

The qualification is aligned with the Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) level 4
