About the course

Prepare for a career in the building and construction industry. Our building course will provide you with the skills and knowledge associated with the planning and construction of a range of building types within Australia. During this course, you will investigate, research and apply problem-solving techniques in a variety of areas.

With the guidance of current industry professionals you’ll learn:

  • to select and prepare a contract
  • to survey sites
  • to apply structural principles to residential low-to-medium rise construction
  • to plan and supervise on-site medium-rise building or construction work
  • the process of identifying and producing estimated costing for building and construction projects
  • the preparation of technical reports
  • the application of structural principles to the construction of medium-rise buildings
  • about project quality and project risk

After successful completion, and with sufficient industry experience you may wish to apply to the Victorian Building Authority (VBA) to become a Registered Building Practitioner (builder). This is subject to applicant interview with the VBA and other factors outside the control of Box Hill Institute. To find out more please refer to the Victorian Building Authority website.

Part time: 2 years (the time taken to complete this course will vary depending on your input)

If you’ve completed your Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) with Box Hill, you’ll receive up to 14 credits towards the diploma. If completed elsewhere we can assess your credits individually.

This is a blended delivery course which will include a combination of online, remote and face to face delivery. Blended learning can involve a range of online programs and resources including StudentWeb, Microsoft Teams, Cisco Webex, Skype, specific industry platforms, pre-recorded sessions, assigned reading, tutorials, discussion boards, and online activities. Blended learning also involves face-to-face attendance at classes or practical placements.

Entry Requirements


You must have successfully completed the equivalent of an Australian Year 12 education with a good level of English.

PRE-TRAINING REVIEW - to assist prospective students to determine whether a course is suitable and appropriate for the individual needs, Box Hill Institute will assess all students’ language, literacy and numeracy and digital literacy by asking you to undertake a self-assessment review prior to the enrolment. A course advisor will discuss the outcomes of the review and make recommendations about whether the course is suitable for you, and identify additional support where required.
