About the course

This performance music course is designed to set you up as a performer, songwriter, studio musician, producer, composer, band member or music teacher in the music industry. Box Hill Institute will provide you with the skills and experiences you need to excel in these professions. 

You'll gain access to our amazing studio facilities, our on campus record label TVR Records as well as our industry standard writing and production suites.  

You'll perform real gigs in front of live audiences, work in a live venue with a capacity of more than 200, produce your own creative portfolio and collaborate with sound production students in our world-class facilities.  

The course will empower you to apply practical and theoretical aspects of music to real creative projects. You'll also get access to our analogue synth collection while studying with like-minded creatives and expand your industry networks.  

You will study:

Performance

  • rehearse music for both group and individual performance in a range of styles and genres
  • learn to improvise / freestyle and over both modern and retro songs
  • develop stage craft skills
  • develop techniques and skill on your chosen instrument

Theory 

  • refine aural skills that we believe are the foundation of all great musicians
  • understand how to read and write music notation/tablature

Recording

  • learn the fundamentals of recording in professional and home set-up studios

Composition and Beat Production

  • develop a range of compositional and arranging techniques on industry software
  • perform music using digital media

  • social media, marketing and promotion

Entry Requirements


You must have a Certificate III or IV in Music Industry or:

  • have successfully completed Year 12 or equivalent, or be a mature age applicant
  • have good written and oral communication skills
  • have good computer skills
  • be at least 17 years of age at the time of course commencement and have a reasonable level of proficiency on a musical instrument,  (or voice), and or audio production
  • book an audition

Please note that even with a completed Certificate IV in Music you may be required to perform an additional audition.

PRE-TRAINING REVIEW - to assist prospective students to determine whether a course is suitable and appropriate for the individual needs, Box Hill Institute will assess all students’ language, literacy and numeracy and digital literacy by asking you to undertake a self-assessment review prior to the enrolment. A course advisor will discuss the outcomes of the review and make recommendations about whether the course is suitable for you, and identify additional support where required.

Pathways & Accreditation


Successful completion will enable you to apply for entry into the first year of the Bachelor of Music Industry. You may also be eligible for some advanced standing (generally one semester worth of credit).

This course is government accredited and has national recognition

The qualification is aligned with the Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) level 5
