About the course

If you are currently working as a team leader or supervisor, or you would like to step up to this role in an open cut quarrying or mining operation, the RII50120 Diploma of Surface Operations Management will give you the necessary training you will need to be competent and effective in the role.

This qualification reflects the role of managers in an open cut quarry, who perform tasks involving a high level of autonomy and requiring significant judgement in planning and determining the selection of equipment, roles and techniques for themselves and others. They are required to demonstrate the application of a broad range of technical, managerial, coordination and planning skills and implement safety management plans.

Box Hill Institute has been training people in the Extractive Industries sector for over 40 years. The course is developed in collaboration with industry and is supported by both the Construction Materials Processing Association (CMPA) and the Institute of Quarrying Australia (IQA). The course is offered via an on-campus option or through our integrated distance learning platform with fixed time online sessions . The on-campus training will primarily be delivered at the Institute's Lilydale campus in 3-day blocks and includes some site visits. The online option is delivered via zoom sessions over 3 day blocks from February to October. Course content covers environmental management, community engagement, pit planning, slope stability, managing major incidents and emergencies as well as business management units. The course includes a high degree of collaboration between you and your fellow students. People who have completed this course recognise the value of networking with other industry professionals to develop models of best practice.
