Box Hill Town Hall was bustling at Box Hill Institute’s annual careers expo held on 8 October.
The expo showcased more than 20 employers ranging from large organisations like the Hawthorn Football Club, Suburban Rail Loop Authority and Department of Defence to local businesses and community organisations, such as the RSPCA.
Yooralla’s Director of Community Services, Megan Slattery said exhibiting at the expo was a valuable benefit of partnership with Box Hill Institute.
“It’s really important for us to have a presence here today. We've recruited staff in the past and we certainly have a need in the eastern suburbs for more staff,” said Ms Slattery.
The expo attracted over 1,200 visitors including high school, TAFE and university students exploring study and career options through to return-to-work parents and mature-aged professionals considering a career change.
IT student, Jaydeep Dahbi was keen to explore further qualifications in cyber security at Box Hill Institute.
“This course is a good opportunity for me as an IT student to gain specialist knowledge in cyber security. I’d love to do it,” said Mr Dahbi.
Tatenda Verenga from the Institute’s Skills and Jobs team said over 50 visitors from near and far attended free career counselling sessions. She noted the long queue highlights the community’s need for expert assistance in navigating the job market.
“It was a real mix of people, some looking to reskill, others asking for the best way to search for jobs. We also had quite a few return-to-work mums looking to reskill and wondering how to fill gaps in their resumes,” said Ms Verenga.
Last year, the Skills and Jobs team was booked out for a month following the careers expo and expect demand will be even greater this year.
In addition to career advice and networking opportunities, visitors enjoyed music by Box Hill Institute graduate, Bella Funk, and tasty snacks from various food trucks.
