A Career Change Late in Life

2020-02-24

Joe Lionnet is one of the many retired and mature aged students studying at Box Hill Institute. He is enrolled in the Certificate IV in Guiding and Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation. Joe made the decision to enrol in these courses after 40 years of working in offices as a Data Analyst. During his career, he has worked in government, insurance and wholesale distribution logistics, and he knew he wanted to do something outdoors.

Joe's hoping to learn new skills that he can use to help others in the future. He said, "I like the hands on nature of this course. It is totally different to the tertiary study I have done in the past," he said.

Attending classes at the Lilydale Lakeside campus is great experience for Joe. He said, "The facilities at Lilydale campus are very good. I like the relaxed rural setting," he said.

Joe also said his teachers have been extremely supportive and encouraging, which is welcome as outdoor recreation is a completely different to finance!

Joe's advice to those who are looking to change career paths is, "Just do it".
