Box Hill Institute Wins Cyber Security Education Provider of the Year

2020-12-01

Box Hill Institute has won the Cyber Security Educator of the Year Award at the Australian Information Security Awards (AISA) 2020 aka the Oscars of Cyber Security. This category is for the TAFE or university that has developed and implemented a comprehensive, flexible and easily accessible cyber security education program, which delivers industry ready graduates to the market.

Box Hill Institute is a pioneer of cyber security training in Australia providing an industry-led, vocational approach. Forming a national panel of industry experts in 2017, the institute developed Victoria’s first vocational cyber security qualification with the Certificate IV in Cyber Security (22334VIC).  These qualifications recognised a job role that had not been formally recognised previously, that of a cybersecurity technician. Then further consultation with industry led to the development of the Advanced Diploma of Cyber Security.

Based on the positive industry response, the federal government requested that Box Hill Institute lead the national TAFE approach to cyber security training to provide a standardised national approach.  In conjunction with industry and TAFEs nationally, this was completed successfully with a consistent Australia-wide approach to vocational cyber security training.

In May 2018, Box Hill Institute launched the Cyber Security Operational Centre (CSOC), the first of its kind in Australia, as a dedicated space for cyber security training. The CSOC has specialised equipment, technology and security, which allows for real world training in this dedicated environment. This facility provides students with job ready training that enhances their learning.  The CSOC has now twice hosted the World Skills cyber security competition, highlighting Box Hill Institute nationally as a premier educational facility for cyber security.

With a high employment rate of graduates, Box Hill Institute’s development of a new, vocational cyber security training model has significantly contributed to the advancement of the sector in three main ways. It has supplied employees who directly fill the skills shortages identified by the industry; developed linkages between the cyber security industry and vocational training that did not exist before; and it has provided a national approach to cyber security training.

Box Hill Institute now provide the following accredited cyber security courses:

  • Certificate IV in Cyber Security (22334VIC)
  • Advanced Diploma in Cyber Security (22445VIC)
  • Graduate Certificate in Cyber Security (GCCS4) and the
  • Graduate Diploma in Cyber Security (GDNS2)

As a result of the institute’s dedication and innovation, our graduates are currently working at leading companies including Cisco, Telstra, IBM, NetApp, NAB, Dimension Data, SEEK, NVIDIA, ANZ, Lumina Networks and Open Universities Australia.
