Furry Partnership Reaps Results

2019-09-02

Since the beginning of this year, Box Hill Institute’s veterinary clinic – Pets on Elgar – has partnered with Sustainable Salons to recycle waste from the grooming salon.

It’s clear that the partnership is producing results. So far this year, Pets on Elgar has:

  • Recycled 71 kilograms of paper
  • Recycled 52 kilograms of metal
  • Kept 36 kilograms of plastic in circulation
  • Recycled 15 litres of excess chemicals back into water
  • Collected 11 kilograms of pet hair from the salon floor
  • Created 9 kilograms of hair booms which could soak up 2 litres of oil in an emergency

The materials collected by Sustainable Salons, which operates across Australia and New Zealand, are sold for recycling or repurposing and 100% of the proceeds are donated to OzHarvest and KiwiHarvest. Based on these donations, the two organisations have been able to provide 92,500 meals for those in need.

The partnership between Box Hill Institute and Sustainable Salons was an Australian first and our teachers and students now recycle up to 95% of their waste by using a comprehensive resource recovery service offered by the partnership.
