Hairdressing Course Brings International Opportunities

2020-10-09

After completing Year 12, Emily Jackson was determined to pursue a career in the hairdressing industry so she enrolled in a Certificate III in Hairdressing at Box Hill Institute as part of a three-year apprenticeship.

Emily’s driven mindset, hard work and inspiration throughout the course didn’t go unnoticed and she was nominated for Box Hill Institute’s Apprentice of the Year in 2019. She was also given a number of opportunities to complement her formal learning.

Emily said, “I was chosen out of a group to help work alongside Shaun McGrath in the Gen Next event for Hair Expo in 2019 in Sydney. We worked on wigs that dancers wore at the event.”

Emily’s favourite experience while studying with Box Hill Institute was working in Singapore on a photoshoot alongside Sharon Blain, one of the world’s most admired hairdressers and educators in the world with over fifty years of experience. Emily said, “A great achievement so far in hairdressing was getting the opportunity to be a part of an exchange team that went to Singapore in 2019, for 3 weeks. It was a great experience and great achievement to get chosen for.”

Emily has now completed her course but still has just less than one year left on her apprenticeship, which she’ll finish while working full time in the salon when it reopens.

Emily says the skills gained from Box Hill Institute will help her work better as a professional in the salon and industry all together. She said, “I feel as though I have gained a wider span of knowledge as my teacher is understanding of the industry itself.”

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Emily did some study remotely, which she adapted to quite well.

For others thinking about pursuing hairdressing as a profession, Emily said go for it. She said, “It is all at your own pace and I highly recommend doing an apprenticeship as you are working at the same time and gaining more experience on the job.”

We wish Emily all the best and know she will be making big moves with her energy!
