The Push Music Careers Expo

2021-08-05

On Tuesday the 29th of June, a chilly, but sunny day, Box Hill Institute’s Music department attended the inaugural Music Careers Expo at the Collingwood Yards, arts precinct. The event was organised and facilitated by The Push, an Australian youth music organisation and registered charity based in Melbourne. For over three decades, The Push have engaged over 700,000 young music lovers through their programs, with alumni Courtney Barnett, Alex Lahey, Alice Ivy and Angie McMahon all going on to enjoy successful, global careers.

Attended by over 200+ predominately high-school students and parents, the event was aimed at aspiring music aficionados looking to pursue a career into one of the many vocations that the industry provides. The day presented a wonderful opportunity for BHI to have a presence amongst our competitors, and to showcase our current VET and HE courses, as well as the amazing facilities that we have.

On the day there were performances, workshops and keynote speakers, with BHI being represented by staff members Joel Ma and Nic Lam who facilitated Ableton Live, and music mixing workshops, and keynote speaker, Alex Lahey, a BHI alumni, who gave our department and facilities a massive shout out!

Located near the main stage, and next to the ever-busy Taco Truck, the BHI stall was a very popular stop for patrons to ask our student team all about the courses that we offer, and experience a virtual tour showcasing our studios, rehearsal rooms and performance spaces.

The day was excellently facilitated by former student and current staff member, Georgina Fiske, who recruited and co-ordinated our student representative team, and made sure that any enquiries relating to our courses, could be answered.

The expo was a great success, and with The Push CEO, Kate Duncan, indicating that it will be run annually, it will undoubtably become a major fixture on the Music departments calendar.

A big shout to our student representatives, alumni and staff: Georgina Fiske, Audrey Ryan, Luke Becker, Joel Armer, Dylan Reid, Sam Amon-Simmons, Tina Behrsin, Joel Ma, Nic Lam, Carolyn Ellis

And a big thanks to Jess Hart and the marketing team, for providing our stall with colour and giveaways, and to Kate and The Push, who with BHI Music, are looking to further collaborate on projects in the coming future.
