The Impact of One Teacher

2020-06-26

In 2019, Zohra Mohammad studied the TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment at Box Hill Institute and she recently got in touch to tell us what a difference her teacher, Doug Kirkpatrick, has had on her career.

Zohra said, “Being a part of his class has been the highlight of my life! Doug is truly a passionate trainer. He goes above and beyond for every student. His level of teaching is exceptional he did indeed make sure my learning was maximised every time! Doug kept the classroom environment lively and kept everybody involved using various strategies. I did indeed take note and apply to my students learning now.”

After completing her course, Zohra obtained a job as a training assessor in early childhood education and care in the vocational education and training sector. She said, “Every day I have continued to remember Doug as the best training assessor. Not only was the knowledge he shared useful but the positive attitude and professional one-on-one interaction he had with us individually, that's really what I keep referring back to in my current job.

“This has opened more doors and in just the fourth week of my training assessor position, I was offered more classes based on my students’ positive feedback. This is truly thanks to Doug's teaching styles and positive training strategies. The college offered me a pay-rise and I took on more classes. It was great fun and very rewarding,” she said.

As a qualified teacher, Zohra understands the importance of being patient, positive and consistent in supporting learners and she knows the effect of this it can be lifelong. She said, “Honestly, I feel blessed to have had the honour to be in Doug's class, as it has had a luminous effect on my lifestyle. At a time like this, during a global pandemic, not only do I have a fantastic position in my new career but I also take his advice everyday: ‘Rule number 1, do not panic!’”

Doug has been with Box Hill Institute for nearly eight years. He has twice been nominated for Teacher of the Year and Zohra is not alone in her praise of his teaching and support.
