It’s been an exciting change for Wheelers Hill Secondary College student Slade Neal, whose family recently moved from South Africa to live in Australia. As part of the Team TAFE School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships Program (SBATS), Slade is pursuing a Certificate III in Hospitality (SIT30616) at Box Hill Institute.
Curious to discover what the hospitality industry is like, he said, “My goal is to increase my skills set and there are not a lot of places in South Africa where a person can go to learn these sort of skills.”
A career in hospitality can take you across the country and anywhere in the world. This program allows students to gain experience and skills in both front of house and back of house roles. Slade said, “My favourite day is Thursdays because we get to serve customers. We gain real on the job training instead of just learning from textbooks. We actually get to put what we learn into action.
“Everybody is very kind and relaxed. I like the fact that we get to work practically in the restaurant,” he said.
In order to balance school, TAFE and work, Slade recommends planning. He said, “I find that if you plan everything beforehand, it is a lot more relaxing and fun. This course is great for those who want to interact with people and want to gain some social skills.”
With many possibilities in the future, Slade is currently undecided on what he wants to pursue however, he said, “The type of things you learn from this course will open a lot of doors for me. This course has made me think of hospitality as a possible career but not forever. I know that I have something to fall back on, in case things don’t work out.”
